Students perform well at extravaganza

The 2019 Clarendon School District 2’s Music Arts Extravaganza was great. All of the students from all of the schools did a phenomenal job at the Weldon Auditorium in Manning, according to directors.


Lady Saints defeat Holly Hill

The Clarendon Hall varsity softball team defeated Holly Hill on Wednesday 9-7 in 8 innings. Amberly Way picked up the win in the circle with 18 strikeouts and allowing only 1 hit. Hannah Corbett was 2-4 scoring 3 runs. Amberly way went 2-3 with a double and a triple and an RBI. McKenzie Bagnal and Bailey Corbett each had 2 hits with an RBI and Lauren Pifer had 3 RBI. With the win Clarendon Hall is now 5-2.

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – Michael Johnson, age 62, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 24, 2018, at Winthrop University Medical Center-Long Island in New York.
Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Henry Solomon and Bertha Brailsford Hart and was raised by the late Jackie and Ruth Johnson.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Gloria Hart, 2487 Elliot Road in Pinewood.

MHS senior signs with York Technical College for football

Manning High School senior Damonte Dennis signed Thursday to play football in the fall for York Technical College in Rock Hill, surrounded by his grandmother, Cheryl Keith; his mother, Yolanda Watson; and his grandmother, Matreylee Denis Garris.


Murdock Allen White

Murdock Allen White, 96, died Sunday, March 24, 2019, at Magnolias of Santee in Santee.
He was a son of the late Wilford G. White Sr. and Rovena Scott White.
Funeral services for Mr. White will be held at 3 p.m. today at Historic Trinity AME Church, 41 Rigby St. in Manning, with the Rev. Courtney Colleton, pastor, presiding, the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough officiating and the Rev. Jerome McCray and the Rev. W.J. Frierson assisting. Burial will follow at Manning Cemetery.

Foundation raises funds in late deputy’s memory

Sheriff Tim Baxley participated in the 2018 Walking the Line relay event held at Manning High School’s Ramsey Stadium in honor for the late Inv. Holmes N. Smith Jr.
The walk is one of several events that will help fund scholarships to be given out by the Inv. Holmes N. Smith Jr. Foundation, said his widow, Tonia Mallett Smith.
The late Smith was returning from Sumter County in early November 2014 when he was killed in a car wreck. There is a memorial cross at the site of the crash on U.S. 521 outside of Alcolu.

First OverComers’ Walk to call Manning home

Clarendon County’s inaugural OverComers’ Walk is coming to Manning.
This walk, presented by the Clarendon County Sherriff’s Office and the Clarendon County Cancer
OverComers Council, “aims to celebrate those who have fought and survived cancer whil also collecting funds for those who are still battling with cancer,” said Annett Smith, one of the event’s
directors.
The walk will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4 at J.C. Britton Park, 3057 Raccoon Road in Manning.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be held the same time at the Clarendon County Community

More than 50 contestants up for Striped Bass Pageant

The Junior Ambassadors of Clarendon County and the Clarendon County Chamber od Commerce will present the 2019 Striped Bass Festival Pageant on Saturday at Weldon Auditorium in Manning.
More than 50 contestants will compete for coveted titles in each of the eight divisions.
The pageant will begin at 5 p.m., and admission is $5 per person.

Frost Advisory issued for Clarendon

The National Weather Service out of Columbia has issued a Frost Advisory dor Clarendon County and surrounding parts of the midlands and Pee Dee regions of Aouth Carolina, effectice from 5 to 9 a.m. Thursday.
The organization predicted Wednesday that most locations in Central South Carolina would have temperstures overnight in the mid- to low-30s. Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation.


LMA JV Lady Seampcats shutout Carolina Academy

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity softball team defeated Carolina Academy in five innings on Wednesay. The finalmscore was 13-0.
Malorie Spiegel went 3-4 with two RBIs, Haley Truett was 2-2 with two RBIs. Spiegel threw a no hitter, striking out 7.

Blush House Boutique, 9 E. Boyce St. in Manning, will hold its official grand opening from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, with a ribbon cutting kicking off the festivities.

Montana governor honors slain deputy, Clarendon native

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock signed into state law earlier this month a bill recognizing a stretch of highway in that state in memory of a Clarendon County native.
Summerton native and Broadwater County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Mason Moore was shot and killed May 16, 2017 on U.S. 387 near Three Forks, Montana, while attempting a traffic stop. Moore was found dead at the scene by deputies sent after Moore stopped responding to dispatchers.
Lloyd Burrus and Marshall Burrus, his son, eventually led law enforcement on a 30-mile chase before fleeing and continuing a shoot-out with authorities. Law enforcement shot the … Read the rest


JV Swampcats defeat Hammond, bring season record to 6-0

Despite allowing four runs in the first inning, the Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity baseball team defeated Hammond on Tuesday by a final score of 12-7. The JV Swampcats improve to 6-0 on the year with the win.
Hammond’s big inning was driven by a error on a ball put in play by Cooper Holbrook and Grant Dorsey.
LMA collected nine hits and Hammond had five in the high-scoring affair. Hammond got things moving in the first inning, when an error scored two runs for Hammond.

Up to 32.8 million Americans have already contracted the flu this winter, according to the latest estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 375,000 people have been hospitalized because of the virus. Thousands of people have already died of the disease this season.
But an end to flu seasons altogether may not be far off. Several research teams are working on the first “universal vaccine,” capable of fighting multiple strains of the virus. Such a treatment could effectively wipe out the disease.

William Raymond Lawhon

William Raymond Lawhon, 71, died on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at his home.
Born in Olanta, he was a son of the late Dewey and Irene Conner Lawhon. Mr. Lawhon was a retired foreman with the city of Sumter.
Surviving are a son, Anthony Lawhon of Sumter; two daughters, Heather Lawhon of Dallas, Texas, and Vicky Edwards of Bishopville; a sister, Betty Ardis of Sumter; and a grandson, Eli Lawhon.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed Lawhon and Roy Lawhon.
