Undefeated and State Champions

The Clarendon Hall varsity boys swept through the 2018-2019 basketball season undefeated, culminating in winning the state championship on February 23. While Head Coach Anthony Reitenour felt confident his boys would have a fantastic season, he was not expecting a season quite like this. Facing close by teams as well as an international team, the Saints rose to every occasion, pushing to excel in each game. “I expected one of them to knock us in the mouth,” said Reitenour. “But no matter what, the boys fought hard. Whatever level of competition they had, they kept pushing.” Reitenour states no one is ever perfect, and the team pushes itself to strive for excellence, and he insists the credit goes to the team for their dedication and commitment. “I’m more happy for them than I am anything else, to be honest,” said Reitenour. The team had 11 players this year: Kylic Horton, 9th grade; Josh Black, 10th grade; Da’Qavion Miller, Zyan Gilmore, Traveon Davis, Tyrese Mitchum, Kade Elliott and Jordan Boyd, 11th grade; and Michael Boylston, Drew Hill and Carson Cumbee, 12th grade. The team will lose three seniors this year, but Reitenour’s starting lineup are all underclassmen and will return for another season. “We’re going to have a pretty heavy senior class next year, but we have some really good guys coming up through the pipeline through JV to fill the spots in coming years,” said Reitenour. Several underclassmen, including freshman Kylic Horton, are already drawing college attention, and Reitenour has high hopes at least a few will go on to play at the college level. Reitenour will continue to push the team to strive for excellence in the 2019-2020 season, and he once again has confidence they will push to do their best. “We’re going to try to be the best we can be, and if that turns out to be another perfect season, I’ll take it,” said Reitenour.
