Scott’s Branch starting quarterback, safety and cornerback Amonte Brown has signed to Newberry College’s football program on last week’s National Signing Day.

“I’m more than excited, I’m blessed. I just want to thank God for giving me this opportunity to pursue my goal and a dream in football,” said Brown. “I’ve been playing football since rec, and I don’t plan on finishing any time soon.”

Newberry College is a private liberal arts college located in Newberry, South Carolina.

“I think Newberry is a great fit for him,” said Assistant Defensive Coach Kevin Miller. “It’s well deserved after the season he had this year. He only played three games after suffering a knee injury. To be able to have a full-ride scholarship for a passion he has for his football, as well as academics, I think it’s extraordinary. I think he’s a great young man, and he carries himself as an intellectual.”

Once at Newberry, Brown will join the team playing at position safety and strong safety, while majoring in psychology and minoring in sport communications. Along with pursuing a career related to those avenues of study, Brown plans to pursue his goal of going into the NFL.

Amonte is a very talented athlete, as well as person. I think his determination and ability to succeed will carry him very far in life. The big thing that distinguishes Amonte is his dedication to the program. He is always willing to go above and beyond,” said Head Coach Brian Smith. “I know he’ll be successful in whatever he does after college, whether that’s a pro career in the NFL or being the president of Newberry College one day.”

“I am very proud of AmonteAmonte is a hard worker, and he worked his way to this place today. He’s a super intelligent guy, and I know he is going to do well. He is destined for greatness,” said Charnette Brown, Amonte’s mother. “And right now, I’m just looking forward to what he’s going to bring to the world. He’s God sent. I just feel like he’s going to do well.”

Brown would also like to thank his parents, for they motivate him most in life.

“My mother has been my backbone since day one, and my father has always made sure that I’m giving 110 percent,” said Brown. “I believe in myself and I know I can do it. I can handle anything thrown in path. I’m taking my knowledge and focus to the next level. I have a dream and I am going to live my dream.”
