OBITUARY: Grayson Cole Brown

Grayson Cole Brown, infant son of Christopher Brown and Jennifer Metzger, died Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at McLeod Health Clarendon.

Surviving in addition to his parents are three brothers, Kayden Brown, Jordan Brown and Trenton Welch; two sisters, Addison Pease and Taylor Pease; paternal grandparents, Zonnie Moultrie of Sumter and Elroy Rozier of Wildwood, Florida; maternal grandparents, Charles Metzger and Deborah Metzger of Manning; and maternal great grandmother, Hazel Watkins of Santee.

Services will be private.

OBITUARY: Alan Stuart “Al” Hovermale Jr.

Alan Stuart “Al” Hovermale Jr., 40, died Friday, November 16, 2018, at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Born April 27, 1978, in Sumter, he was a son of Almeita Mitchum Hovermale and the late Alan Stuart Hovermale. He was a 1996 graduate of Laurence Manning Academy and he was a finance manager in the auto industry. Al was a generous and loving friend and he adored his family. He was a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Elevator out at Manning Town Hall

Murder-for-hire plot stopped by law enforcement

The Manning Police Department and the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office have released the following information.

On October 09, 2018, Agents with the City/County Narcotics Unit of the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office and the Manning Police Department learned through an investigation of a murder-for-hire plot.  Over the next several weeks, Agents with the City/County Narcotics Unit, along with SLED, conducted an investigation of the alleged murder-for-hire plot.

Manning City Council responds to question regarding FOIA

On Friday, November 9, another reporting body raised a question about the legality of the Manning City Council’s agenda for Tuesday, November 13. On the agenda, it lists an executive session item. However, it does not list what will be discussed during the executive session. Due to this question arising regarding the legality of the agenda for Tuesday, the attorneys for the City Council have responded with a press release.

I Am That Girl

Sharon Mellette had a vision for the community. As a 22-year teacher in District 1, now serving as Dean of Students, Mellette developed a love and concern for the young ladies at Scott’s Branch Middle/High School.

Last year, Mellette began a mentoring program, working together with the 21st Century afterschool program. This year, she has continued the program and pulls girls ages 11-18 out of the afterschool program every Wednesday from 3:45-5 p.m.

A new employee needs a name

The Manning Times has a new employee. He’s not a typical employee, as he will not receive a traditional paycheck, even though his hours will be as long, if not longer than anyone else. He will be the first one at work in the mornings and the last one there at night. He will even be there on weekends.

His day will consist of supervisory work, moving from co-worker to co-worker to involve himself in their day-to-day tasks. He will listen to complaints and will offer meditative assistance for those needing to de-stress.

Who is Georgia Pacific?

Georgia-Pacific has been a part of the Clarendon County business community since May of 2010, with a fully operational plant since February 2013. After purchasing the Grant Forest Products facility, Georgia-Pacific invested $29 million over the next three years to add infrastructure, catwalks and safety features before going live to produce oriented strand board, or OSB.

The following children won the Halloween Costume Contest. Congratulations to each winner.

Eleven-month-old Eleanor Lace Stukes won the age 0-6 Best Homemade Costume with her portrayal of a little old lady. She is the daughter of Joseph and Brandee Stukes.

Four-year-old Josiah Mellerson won the Age 0-6 Best Store-bought Costume as Flash. Mellerson is in the K-4 program at Laurence Manning Academy. He is the son of Katrina Mellerson.

Three-year-old Ariana Mears won the Age 0-6 Most Creative Costume with her portrayal of a dirty laundry basket. She is the daughter of Marie Rivera.

November Democratic Party meeting

During the November meeting of the Clarendon County Democratic meeting, Representative Bobby Ridgeway offered a legislative update to the Party. To open his remarks, Ridgeway expressed support for the Smith-Norrell team, who ran for Governor and Lt. Governor on the Democratic ticket.

As a medical professional, Ridgeway fully supported Smith’s promises to accept the federal Medicaid funds, thereby allowing under-insured Clarendon County residents to have access to healthcare. Ridgeway also encouraged voters to take advantage of the early voting opportunities.
