JV Lady Saints remain undefeated going into final game of season

The Clarendon Hall junior varsity softball team ran its record to 12-0 on the season Monday in Walterboro with a 21-14 win against Colleton Prep.
Amberly Way picked up the win on the mound with 10 strike-outs to lead the JV Lady Saints in remaining undefeated. Way also led on offense with a 4-4 day and three RBI. Olivia Wilson and Colleen McIntosh were 3-5 each with Wilson having three RBI and McIntosh having one. Hadleigh McIntosh was 3-6 with three RBI and Macie McIntosh was 3-4 with one RBI. Barney A. McElveen Jr.

LAMAR – Barney A. McElveen Jr. 75, widower of Diane Ashley McElveen, died Monday, April 30, 2018, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born Dec. 14, 1942, in Florence, he was a son of the late Barney Adam McElveen and Juanita Oliver McElveen. He was the co-owner of McElveen and Granger Auto Electric, a former owner and operator of Taw Caw Campground in Summerton, and more recently an assistant manager at Dollar General.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Granger; and two brothers-in-law, Pete Granger and Ronald Drennon.

Abraham Briggs Jr. 65, died Sunday, April 29, 2018, at his home, 2137 George Harvin Road in Manning.
Born Nov. 17, 1952, in Manning, he was a son of the late Abraham Briggs Sr. and Hattie Lucille Doughty Briggs.

Wolverines win first game of playoffs

The East Clarendon High School varsity Wolverines defeated St. Johns on Monday in the first game of the Class A District VII playoffs by a final score of 15-0.
Aidan Singletary won the game on the mound for East Clarendon, pitching a no-hitter. Matthew Floyd went 3-3, with two doubles and six RBI for the Wolverines.

Pinewood Baptist to hold Homecoming Sunday

Pinewood Baptist Church, S.C. 261 in Pinewood, will hold Homecoming and Golden Age services Sunday, with Sunday school at 10 a.m., followed by morning worship services at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bennie T. Swampcats win first game of quarterfinals

The Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats defeated Hammond 6-5 on Monday in the opening game of the South Carolina Independent School Association AAA baseball playoff quarterfinals.
The team, which has a season record of 16-4, is the two-time defending state champion. The Swampcats continue their quest for a third state title at 6 p.m. today in Columbia.

ROCK HILL – Premuel Louise Crosby Gibson, wife of Willie “Skeet” Jerome Gibson, died Sunday, April 29, 2018.
Born Jan. 16, 1944, in Lexington, she was a daughter of the late Primeus and Premuel Green Crosby.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the home, 10 Watts St. in the Bellwood subdivision of Manning.

Prison reforms in South Carolina can’t wait

 It took one of the deadliest prison brawls in decades to get everyone’s attention, but help finally is on the way for South Carolina’s troubled prisons.

A national association of correctional professionals will investigate what went wrong at Lee prison a week ago today, triggering the outbreak of inmate-on-inmate violence. Volunteers with the S.C. State Guard will patrol Lee’s perimeter and other prisons to help keep contraband from being thrown over fences. And new cellphone-blocking technology should be in place at Lee by the end of May.

CCSD3 installs newly elected board members and board officers

April 19, Clarendon County District 3 School Board met. During the meeting, newly elected board members were sworn in. Reverend Carnell Hampton swore in George Frierson, and Superintendent Connie Dennis swore in Ellis Evans. Immediately following, board members unanimously re-elected Jason Newsome as School Board Chairman and elected Frierson as Vice Chairman. Dennis swore in Newsome and Frierson for their elected positions.
