Clarendon County Sites Named to Top 10 Places to Visit in South Carolina During Black History Month

The Green Book of SC honored:   Liberty Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church and Summerton High School in Clarendon County — Meetings held in this church in the 1940s and 1950s led to local court cases that helped bring about the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling desegregating public schools. Nineteen members of this congregation were plaintiffs in the case of Briggs v. Elliott, heard in U.S. District Court in Charleston in 1952. Although the three-judge panel refused to abolish racial segregation in South Carolina schools, a dissenting opinion influenced the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Deputies searching for burglary suspect

Deputies with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office are currently searching for a Sumter man accused of breaking into a home in the 1100 block of Woodard Road. Essau Jefferson is described as being 5-foot-10 and 230 pounds with dreadlocks. He has an outstanding warrant for second-degree burglary. He allegedly goes by the alias “Saw Man Jefferson,” which is also the handle he uses on Facebook. =Anyone with information as to the suspect’s whereabouts should call (803) 435-4414. Callers may remain anonymous.

Missing Sumter woman found in Mississippi

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office announced early Tuesday afternoon that a 75-year-old woman reported missing on Monday had been found safe in Waynesboro, Mississippi. Judith A. Cole was last seen in Pickens at 2:15 p.m. Monday. It is reported she used her credit card at a store there and asked for directions back to Sumter. Deputies said her credit card recorded another use in birmingham, Alabama on Tuesday morning.

Man who posed as contractor sentenced, ordered to pay $8K restitution

A Greeleyville man accused of dishonest contracting services in as many as 15 cases in five counties has pleaded guilty to charges in Clarendon County. Chandler Brenton “Chad Warren of 70 German Road pleaded guilty in late January to two counts of breach of trust with fraudulent intent, value more than $2,000, but less tan $10,000. Third Circuit Judge R. Ferrell Cothran gave Warren concurrent sentences of five years in prison, suspended to 90 days in jail and five years’ probation. Cothran also required restitution of $3,505.13 in one case and $4,400 in another as part of Warren’s probation, allowing… Read the rest
