Columbia, S.C. – The Columbia Museum of Art presents A Jazz Celebration of The Beatles, the third concert in the 2017 – 2018 season of CMA Jazz on Main. On Friday, February 23, at 7:30 p.m., the Noel Freidline Quartet takes on the Fab Four in an evening that masterfully reimagines some of the iconic band’s most well-known songs, including “Let It Be,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “In My Life,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Blackbird,” and “Come Together.”
John, Paul, George, and Ringo — no last names needed. The Beatles were that iconic, innovative, and influential. In less than ten years, they redefined pop and rock and pointed the way to how music would be created for the next 40 years. Not the least of their contributions may be a lexicon of songs that can stand up to reinterpretation and recasting into most any genre. Their masterful melodies and strong harmonic approach makes their music a perfect jumping off point for jazz musicians.
“I have always felt that the test of a really good song is whether it can survive when you put it in a different genre than it was originally intended,” says Noel Freidline, internationally renowned bandleader and artistic director of CMA Jazz on Main. “The music of The Beatles is a classic example of songwriting at its best. The melodies are so strong, so memorable and musical. Combined with chord progressions that are points of reference in themselves, their music is perfect for reinterpretation. And so much of their music is woven into the sonic tapestry of the ’60s and ’70s and has been embraced by generations that were born long after the Fab Four broke up. This allows us to take their music in so many different directions without the fear of losing its relevance.”
Based out of Charlotte, N.C., Freidline and his band have opened for many jazz legends, from Dave Brubeck to Rosemary Clooney. The Noel Freidline Quartet’s sound is characterized by sophisticated arrangements that always retain a playful element of spontaneity.
“This has been one of the most popular shows we have performed throughout the Southeast,” says Freidline. “I know it is something Columbia audiences will appreciate.”
