4 ways to prevent colds and flu

Posted

We have all experienced the misery of being sick - a runny nose, body aches, a sweltering fever, the chills, fatigue. Fortunately, it is possible to assist your body in fighting off colds and the flu. Read on for a list of four ways to boost your body's defenses against sickness.

Support Your Immune System With Nutrition

Bolstering your immune system with a nutrient dense diet is a crucial step in preventing sickness. Consuming the right vitamins and minerals can give your body extra strength against viruses and bacteria.

Make a point to consume the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables each day along with adequate, high-quality protein, plenty of water, and an array of antioxidants. A few examples of powerful foods to include in your diet include:

  • Citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges - these fruits are high in the antioxidant Vitamin C
  • Berries - These little powerhouses contain a vast array of vitamins, antioxidants, and bioflavonoids that help support the immune system
  • Leafy greens - Kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, and other greens are bursting with potent compounds that boost your health

Prioritize Sleep

Research has proven that our bodies require a minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep a day in order to properly stimulate an immune response from our cells that fight off germs. To ensure a good night of sleep, consider limiting or eliminating alcohol consumption since it can interfere with the quality of your rest.

Wash Hands

Washing your hands often and thoroughly is an easy, scientifically proven way to prevent yourself from becoming sick. Be sure to apply soap all over your hands, scrub for at least 30 seconds, and rinse with an ample amount of water anytime you shake hands with someone or touch a surface known for harboring germs such as door handles, drinking fountains or elevator buttons.

Regular soap and water are all it takes to kill off a large variety of germs and viruses. In a pinch, hand sanitizer can be used until you are near a sink with soap and water. It is also important to fully dry hands to prevent them from getting flaky - which can allow germs to get in - and follow up with a hydrating lotion.

Also, when in a public restroom, use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open any doors on your way out to prevent the reintroduction of germs on your clean hands.

Exercise

Working out on a regular basis has a proven positive effect on the immune system.

All in all, by following one or preferably more of these tips, your chances of getting sick this season will be greatly reduced.
