DOT: Crews out in Clarendon to clear roads

State Department of Transportation spokesman Robert Kudelka said in a release Thursday morning that road crews have been moved to areas of the midlands that were most severely impacted by Winter Storm Grayson. That includes Clarendon, Hampton and Orangeburg counties in Engineering District 7, he noted. "The majority of our roads are wet," he said. "Some roads on the eastern side of the district are partially covered with snow. Snow and ice removal operations are being performed on interstate and primary routes." Kudelka urged caution for any would be motorists. He said that continued cold temperatures could keep ice on the ground longer than expected. "Motorists are strongly discouraged from any travel east of I-95 and south of I-26 today as conditions are hazardous," he said. "In addition to possible icy conditions, motorists should also watch for slow moving SCDOT equipment applying spicing materials." Kudelka said that 839 maintenance employees were active involved with road-clearing operations overnight. He said that thus far the agency has used 3,857 tons of salt; 410 tons of sand; 3,246 gallons of calcium chloride; 194,800 gallons of salt brine; and 333 snow removal equipment units.
