Clarendon Hall students enjoy ‘Polar Express

Clarendon Hall students in K4 through fifth grades enjoyed a day of fun Monday with the Polar Express. The children came to school in their pajamas, brought pillows and blankets and watched the movie. Parents and Headmaster Phil Rizzo, who served as the conductor, prepared breakfast and punched boarding tickets, respectively.

A 1989 graduate of Rock Hill High School, Steven C. Demby Jr. attended Charleston Southern University, graduating with honors with a bachelor of science degree in organizational management. Now a community paramedic with McLeod Health Clarendon, he became a first resonder in March 1997.

GOP to hold Christmas Party on Dec. 14

The Clarendon County Republican Party will hold its annual Christmas Party at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at Cornerstone Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church, 2116 Greeleyville Highway in Manning, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Dinner, prepared by ladies of the church, will be provided at 6:30 p.m. Donations are welcome. Mary Alice Hoyt will be the special guest for the evening, providing musical selections on her harp. There will also be door prizes.


Guilty Pleas: Dec. 4-8

The following pleas were heard during a term of General Sessions Court held in Clarendon County in the 3rd Judicial Circuit from Dec. 4-8 before 3rd Circuit Court Judge George M. McFaddin Jr.
Latavia Nakita Billups of 1098 Goins Place in Summerton pleaded guilty Dec. 4 to forgery, no dollar amount given or involved, receiving a sentence of one year in prison, suspended to nine months’ probation.
Korey Dennis Campbell of 1070 Kolb Road in Manning pleaded guilty Dec. 5 to second-degree burglary, non-violent, receiving a sentence of five years in prison, suspended to time-served and two years’ probation. According … Read the rest


JV Lady Saints defeat Patrick Henry Academy

The Clarendon Hall junior varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a region win over Patrick Henry Academy by a score of 26-23 on Monday night to go 2-1 in region play. Bailey Corbett led the Lady Saints with 10 points Amberly Way added five points, while Hadleigh McIntosh and McKenley Wells had four points each. The Saints will play Friday against Andrew Jackson Academy at home.


LMA JV Swampcats defeat Kings Academy

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity boys’ basketball team defeated The Kings Academy by a final score of 48-9 on Monday night. Austin Deppa had 14 points, while Gabs Harris had 12, Trey Sharpe had six, Denzell Sigler had six and Johnson Jolly and Buddy Gales had four points each. The team’s record is now 3-2.


JV Saints fall to Patrick Henry

The Clarendon Hall junior varsity boys’ basketball team fell Monday to Patrick Henry Academy by a score of 25-17. Josh Black and Jonathan McIntosh scored seven points each to lead the Saints. Brantley Hodge added three points. The Saints are now 1-4 on the season.

The Clarendon Hall varsity girls’ basketball team lost to Patrick Henry by a score of 53-22 on Monday night. Whitney Avins led the Lady Saints with eight points. Mallory McIntosh added six points.


JV Lady Swampcats beat Kings Academy

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats defeated the Kings Academy of Florence by a final score of 32-24 on Monday. Breanna Boykin and Audrey Bennett led the JV Lady Swampcats in scoring, with 10 points each. This was the team’s fourth consecutive win after a loss in the season opener. The team will play Jan. 3 against Hammond.


Saints remain undefeated

The Clarendon Hall varsity Saints remained undefeated in region play at 3-0 with a win over Patrick Henry Academy on Monday night. The final score was 85-49. Zyan Gilmore led the Saints with 34 points. Kylic Horton added 21 points, while Kade Elliott finished with nine. Rounding out the rest of the scoring were Tyrese Mitchum with eight points, Dylan Way with seven, Robbie James with three, Michael Bolyston with two and Wells Robinson with one. Mitchum led the Saints in rebounds with eight overall.

Public invited to review public school instructional materials proposed for 2018

The state Department of Education is inviting the public to review instructional materials that are being proposed for use in South Carolina’s public schools.
The virtual public review includes three programs that school districts have requested be evaluated for possible state adoption. In January and February 2018, the recommendations for these materials will be submitted to the state Board of Education by the board’s appointed Instructional Materials Review Panel.
The three district-requested programs include:
Chinese Language Arts and Literacy Immersion Program, K-8; Publisher: Better Chinese; Program: Better Immersion Classroom Set, Levels S and 1-8;
