Sheriff’s Office, Behavioral Health announce Prescription Drop Box

Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley and Clarendon Behavioral Health Services Executive Director Ann Kirven had much to celebrate in eearly November.
The pair were the recipients of a grant from the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services that will provide a permanent Prescription Drop Box for the disposal of unused prescription medication that Kirven said could otherwise lead to abuse and addiction.

GOP to hold Christmas Party on Dec. 14

The Clarendon County Republican Party will hold its annual Christmas Party at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at Cornerstone Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church, 2116 Greeleyville Highway in Manning, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Dinner, prepared by ladies of the church, will be provided at 6:30 p.m. Donations are welcome. Mary Alice Hoyt will be the special guest for the evening, providing musical selections on her harp. There will also be door prizes.


MPS student wins Rec Department Christmas Card Contest

Manning Primary School second-grade student Jazlynn Robinson’s artwork will be gracing offices throughout the country this holiday season.
Jazlynn, 8, was the winner of this year’s Clarendon County Recreation Department Christmas Card Contest, and her card will now take its place as both the Recreation Department and the Clarendon County Development Board Christmas card for 2017.

SBMS Eagles fall to D.P. Cooper

The Scott’s Branch Middle School boys’ basketball team fell 43-38 to D.P. Cooper on Monday in Summerton. Randy Gispon led the team in scoring, with 15 points. Tariq Coard followed with eight points. Terrance Pusher had six points, while Tydarian Chandler had four points. Jimmy Weeks had three points and Shaheem Ballard had two points.


Lady Swampcats fall to Palmetto Christian

The Laurence Manning Academy varsity Lady Swampcats fell 55-49 on Saturday in the Baron Classic in Sumter to Palmetto Christian Lexi Bennett led the team with 19 points. Abbie Patrick had six points.

Not too late to be someone’s Christmas Angel

It’s not too late for residents to aid Laurence Manning Academy’s 4H Club’s plan to provide a nice Christmas for the children at the Turbeville Free Will Baptist Children’s Home.
The club’s Angel Tree will be on display at the Harvin Clarendon County Library through Friday afternoon. Tickets may be picked up from the tree, detailing age-specific items one might buy for a boy or a girl. Those items may then be dropped off to Clarendon County Clemson Extension.

GREELEYVILLE – Jimmy Lee Moore, 60, husband of Simone Honkompt Moore, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at the home of his daughter, Shari Moore, 130 Gate Post Lane in Columbia.
Born Oct. 3, 1957 in Greeleyville, he was a son of Rena Oliver Moore and the late Mark Moore.

WINNSBORO – Edward Mickens, 49, husband of Sarah Mickens, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at his home, 255 Pump House Road in Winnsboro.
Born Jan. 28, 1968, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Robert Lee Player and Daisy Mae Gamble Mickens.
Funeral services for will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at Walker Gamble Elementary School in New Zion, with Pastor James Doggett Jr. presiding and Pastor JOseph Privette providing eulogy, assisted by Minister Stanley Simmons.
Burial will follow in the Hickory Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Douglas Koonce, 82, husband of Elizabeth Anne DuBose Koonce, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 12, 2017, at his home in Turbeville, after an illness.
Born July 4, 1935 in Henderson, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Nathan Koonce Jr. and Lois Rednour Koonce. He was a retired carpenter who enjoyed hunting and fishing and raising animals of all kind.

SUMMERTON – Ronald Lewis Denning, 67, husband of Margie Susan Smith Denning, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017, at Palmetto Health Tuomey in Sumter.
Born Jan. 16, 1950, in Burlington, Iowa, he was a son of the late Edward William Denning and the late Amelia Marie Suter Denning. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Tybee Island American Legion. He was an avid musician and a former member of the Four Way Stop Band.

Ragin-Champagne to take over as full District 1 superintendent

Clarendon School District 1 has a new superintendent.
The district board offered the position on a permanent basis to interim Superintendent Barbara Ragin Champagne, who was appointed in July to replace outgoing Superintendent Dr. Rose Wilder.
The board made the decision during a special meeting held Nov. 30, according to a news release.
“The board calls upon all citizens of Clarendon School District 1 to join us in welcoming Ms. Champagne as our superintendent,” said board Chairman Tony Junious. “Let us all work together for our children and our community.”

Lexington man arrested on child pornography charge

South Carolina Attorney Gen. Alan Wilson announced the arrest Tuesday of Joshua William St. Martin Ancik, 32, of Lexington, on one charge connected to the exploitation of a minor. Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force investigators with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest.
Investigators state Ancik distributed child pornography.
Ancik was arrested on Dec. 6. He is charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment.
The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
