Clarendon Hall varsity boys’ basketball coach Anthony Reitenour is pulling double duty this year. He will also serve as the varsity girls’ basketball coach during the 2017-18 season. “It’s been really interesting,” said Reitenour of coaching both teams at the same time. “You get to see different levels of talent among the separate groups. The teams can feed off of each other as well.” Like the boys’ team, the girls finished 0-17 in the 2016-17 season. Reitenour said he’s obviously hoping for a better finish in the 2017-18 season. “They were pretty much as green as the boys’ team,” Reitenour said. “There was a lot of turmoil on the team. They weren’t enjoying the game anymore. They had checked out.” Reitenour actually stepped in to the head coach position for the girls toward the end of last season. “I would like to believe I’ve breathed new life into them,” he said. “They’ve worked hard. They’re in the gym just like the boys. They have improved quite a lot.” Reitenour said the team is a little behind where it needs to be. “I helped with football, and they didn’t finish until recently,” he said. “But I definitely see improvement with the team, so I’m not worried. I don’t know if it will be as vast an improvement as I see with the goys, but I see the team moving in the right direction.” Reitenour said the team will rely on Malorie McIntosh and Sydney Wells. “They led the team last year; I expect them to do the same this year,” Reitenour said. He noted that the team to bet is Dorchester. “They won the State Championship title last year,” Reitenour said. “They lost a lot of players, but they have really good ones returning. They will be the team to beat in our conference. Outside of them, I expect St. Johns Academy to be the next big challenge in the girls’ conference. They’re going to be the teams that reign in our conference. They’re the ones to get past.”
