Letter: Thank you for making shelter golf tournament a success

Posted

Most of the 130 or so golfers at the Second Chance Animal Shelter Golf Classic luncheon probably had cell phones, but unfortunately, no one captured what was to many people the most exciting moment of the day.

As the winning ticket was drawn for the Margaritaville bicycle - generously donated by the local bicycle Corporation of America - a young man jumped up, let out a few shouts and waved his arms in the air as he held up the winning ticket.

Most of the other golfers were probably disappointed that they hadn’t won the bike - until they saw what happened next. After his winning ticket was verified, the man walked over, climbed on to test the fit of the bicycle, and to everyone’s surprise, joyfully rode across the room and out the door. People laughed and cheered, having the same thought - the bike went to the right person!

Excitement had also been high during the drawing for other prizes, like a weekend at a condo in St. Augustine, donted by Henry and Diana Armstrong; two golf lessons with Trackman Golf Radar with PGA Master Instructor Boykin Powers; and a bottle of Wild Turkey Decades Whiskey and a Clemson National Championship Limited Edition commemorative bottle of wine, both of which were donated by Mac’s Place Spirits in Sumter.

A Second Chance Animal Shetler is very grateful to those and all of Manning, Sumter and Santee businesses and individuals who gave the opportunity for many winners with their prize donations.

We are grateful to all who made the tournament a special event for A Second Chance Animal Shelter, beginning with breakfast provided by Rose Grudza and Paula Boudreau. The staff of the beautiful, newly reopened Players Course at Wyboo was extremely accommodating and helpful. Jeannie Neil drove the Players Course Beer Cart and donated her tips. Terry Rogers at Manning Piggly Wiggly provided juice and soft drinks. Dr. Marva Williams donated the lovely plates and flatware for the delicious southwestern barbecue Lunch prepared by Chef Ted Brownell and the large array of desserts baked by volunteers.

Of course, the day would not have been such a success without the golfers who played in the tournament and the volunteers who helped throughout the day. On behalf of all the animals that we care for, thanks to everyone who made this fundraiser a success.
