South Carolina Attorney Gen. Alan Wilson announced the arrest of Brock Bladen Garrett, 20, of Scranton on one charge connected to the dissemination of obscene material to a minor.
Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force investigators with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest. Investigators with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a member of the Minnesota ICAC Task Force, and Red Lake Nation Police Department assisted with the investigation.
Investigators state Garrett sent a nude image to the minor victim via social media.

NEW YORK, New York – Deacon Mary Lee Rhames Green Pearson, 69, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, at New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late George and Malvenia Jones Rhames. She was the widow of Ralph T. Pearson.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at St Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating. Final resting place will be at the church cemetery.
Pearson will be placed in the church an hour prior to the service.

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – Kendrick Marcel Hughes, 31, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, following a brief illness.
Born Oct. 15, 1985, in Houston, he was a son of Michelle Renee Blasher of Columbia and Shelton Leon Hughes Jr. of Manning. He attended the public schools of Knox County, Tennessee, and Beaufort and Clarendon counties. He attended Job Corps in Bamberg, where he received his high school diploma and forklift operator certification. He was employed in the construction industry.

Southern Flair is currently selling tickets for a drawing to raise funds for the Forgotten Tails Animal Rescue. Tickets are one for $3, two for $5 and five for $10, and can be purchased at Southern Flair, which is now located across from Hardee’s on Sunset Drive in Manning. The drawing is for a $50 gift card or the choice of a home decor item from Southern Flair.

The Manning High School girls’ tennis team defeated Wade Hampton High School on Wednesday in the first round of the South Carolina 3-A State Playoffs. The final score was 5-2.
Marie Joyner, Lorena Sanchez and Katie Feagin all won their singles matches with scores of 7-5 and 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4 and 6-3 and 6-1, respectively.
Grace Lemmon and Kailyn Vicente won their doubles match by scores of 6-1 and 6-2, while Shanyia Gamble and Marie Joyner won theirs by a score of 8-2.

Clarendon School District 1, in partnership with the Reading Roadmap, will submit an application to the South Carolina Department of Education for a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.
If awarded, the grand funds will be used to establish and support an afterschool and summer program at Summerton Early Childhood Center. The program will provide academic support, enrichment activities and family literacy activities.
Members of the community, students and parents are invited to participate in the planning process.

Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force investigators with the Horry County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest. Investigators with the Attorney General’s Office, also a member of the state’s ICAC Task Force, assisted with the investigation.
Investigators state Hajba distributed child pornography.
Hajba was arrested Wednesday and charged with eight counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Imagine a child sitting alone at her school’s table, other children sitting other places throughout the school’s cafeteria.
This child always sits alone. Other kids avoid her, not as if she’s invisible, but as if she has some contagious deadly illness.
When she sees bullying, Manning Primary School Counselor Elizabeth Briley says that this type of exclusion and avoidance is the most prevalent behavior children use to purposefully hurt other children.
