Wayne Millard McElveen

SUMTER - Wayne Millard McElveen, 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.

Born March 5, 1941, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Earl and Alice Lorelle (Player) McElveen. He attended Edmunds High School, graduating with the Class of 1959, and then served in the U.S. Army. While in the Army, Wayne was stationed in Bamburg, Germany. After returning to South Carolina, Wayne enjoyed a fulfilling career with the United States Postal Service He was also the principal of McElveen Tax Service in Sumter.

Wayne was the proud father of two sons, William Kevin Wayne McElveen of Jacksonville, Florida, and Bryan Robert McElveen and his husband, Adam, of Charleston. His joy in life were his triplet granddaughters, Emily, Jaime and Elizabeth McElveen, all of Jacksonville.

Survivors besides his sons and granddaughters include his wife, Carole Marshall of Sumter; three step-children, Gina Schaack of Houston, Texas, Lisa Baily of Sumter and Dee Ann Marshall of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; five step-grandchildren, Kelsie, Keegan and Kristin Schaak and Sydney and Christopher Bailey; two sisters, Clarice McElven Staley and Cynthia McElveen Hamilton, both of Sumter; a special sister-in-law, Beryl Geddings; a number of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces and great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces; and a special great-niece, Mary Paisley Geddings.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Donna Judith McElveen and Marilyn McElveen Hyatt, both formerly of Sumter.

Wayne truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, including attending to his yard and gardens, observing the many birds that lived there, loving his dogs and granddogs, cheering on his favorite teams, meeting for breakfast with his friends and spending time with family.

With an analytical mind he was a financial advisor to many. He was, above all, a man with an ingrained kindness that left an incredible impression on all that knew and loved him. Wayne had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way, and always with a bright sense of humor.

Family, friends, and others whose lives Wayne touched are invited to Bethel Baptist Church, 2401 Bethel Baptist Church Road, Sumter, SC 29150, from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, to reminisce, grieve, and support each other.

Memorial services will follow at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, in the Bethel Baptist Church sanctuary. A private family burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Wayne's name to The American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
