McLeod Occupational Health is teaming up with McAngus, Goudelock and Courie Law Firm to host a Workers' Compensation Seminar from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Nov. 3 at McLeod Health Clarendon, 50 Hospital St. in Manning. "This free seminar will include topics like 'An Overview of the South Carolina Workers' Compensation System,' 'What Employers Should Know from a Commisioner's Perspective,' 'What Employers Should Know from a Physician's Perspective,' 'How to Prepare for a Deposition,' and 'How Onsite Health Clinics Impact the Bottomline," said McLeod Health Workplace Health and Safety Vice-President Octavia Williams-Blake. "Special presenters will include attorneys Walt Barefoot and J. Brandon Hylton of McAngus, Goudelock and Courie Law; South Carolina Workers' Compensation Commission Chairman T. Scott Beck; Dr. Lawrence Conley of McLeod Orthopaedics Clarendon; and McLeod Occupational Health Associate Vice-President Dr. Jeniqua Duncan. McLeod Occupational Health held its 10th annual Workers’ Compensation Seminar earlier this year. A release from McLeod Health Clarendon said the purpose of these seminars "are educate and inform business leaders and Occupational Health partners about the latest trends in workers’ compensation injury management and legislation." Williams-Blake has more than 15 years of experience in workers' compensation. When she began working with McLeod Occupational health, she saw a need to provide education to the business partners on these issues. “I attended a Workers’ Compensation seminar in Charlotte 11 years ago and came away with a desire to bring this to our industry leaders," she said. "Many employers in our region honor us by choosing McLeod to care for their injured workers. Bringing this high quality offering, free of charge, to the region is one way to show our thanks and appreciation. We have been blessed to have Turner Padget and now McAngus, Goudelock and Courie Law Firm partner with us from the very beginning.” Williams-Blake said Barefoot and Hylton readily committed to the vision of hosting a seminar for local business and industry leaders. "While most Workers' Compensation seminars are directed toward lawyers or insurance representatives, this seminar focuses on the employer," Hylton said. "Over the years, we have had doctors, physical therapists, investigators, insurance adjusters, commissioners and even a claimant's attorney discus the impact an employer has on a workers' compensation claim." Barefoot noted that the workers' compensation laws "are not always what people think they are." "These seminars allow us to reach out to the employer community and provide education on the law," he said. "It also gives us the opportunity to share with employers some ideas on the best practices for handling workers' compensation."
