An Alcolu man who was helping build a plant in Charleston died Thursday as the result of an accident there. Michal "Mickey" Thomas Jr., 38, was identified as the victim of the incident early Saturday morning by Charleston County Dep. Coroner Sheila Williams. Williams said that Thomas died "as the result of injuries sustained in a fall at the Mercedes-Benz Vans plant under construction." Williams said that the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, the North Charleston Police Department and her own office continue to investigate the incident. Mercedes-Bens Vans LLC spokeswoman Alyssa Bean told a Charleston news station that the accident happened about 2:30 p.m Thursday. She said Thomas was the employee of a subcontractor who was at the expansion site in North Charleston. Williams said that while emergency personnel responded quickly to the incident, Thomas died a few hours later at a local hospital. "Safety is a top priority for every person entering the site, and we are saddened by this tragic accident," Bean told Live5 News of Charleston. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual's friends and family at this time." Bean said in a statement that both the plant, contractor and subcontractor are working closely with authorities.
