The Laurence Manning Academy Lady Swampcats fell 3-0 to Carolina Academy on Thursday night, with game scores of 25-6, 25-9 and 25-15. Perry Lee Lve Hicks, Madilyn Richburg and Abby Haney each had two serve points. Madilyn Richburg had four kills. Abby Haney had three kills.


LMA B-team destroys Florence Christian

The Laurence Manning Academy football B-team defeated Florence Christian on Thursday by a final score of 64-6. Davis Campbell completed an eight-yard touchdown reception from Brandon King. Joe Wilson got the two-point conversion catch. Dalton Brown had a 34-yard touchdown run, with Brandon King then running for the two-point conversion.
Davis Campbell then had a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown. Dalton Brown got the two-point conversion run. Brandon King had a 37-yard touchdown run, while Connor Smith had the two-point conversion.

Reaves’ legacy looms large

Bobbie Jo Carter Reaves was a mentor to many who knew her. A former Drug Court judge and Clarendon County Election Commission chairwoman, she was also active as president of the Backporch Players, with the Civilian Club and also as an assistant solicitor with the 3rd Circuit Worthless Check Unit.
An Alcove native, Reaves died Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.
Born June 17, 1939, in Pamplico, she was a daughter of the late Jeremiah Hill Carter and Tyra Parvenu Lee Carter. She was a retired law partner with Land, Parker and Reaves Law Firm and … Read the rest


Sumter deputies looking for 15-year-old girl

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is currently reaching out to the public for help in finding a 15-year-old girl.
Kenya Horace’s mother told deputies the girl was last seen about 5 p.m. Thursday. She is described as having black hair and brown eyes, weighing about 175 pounds and standing 5-foot-3. Her mother said she could have been wearing a purple shirt and camouflage pants.

JV Lady Swampcats fall to Carolina Academy

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats fell to Carolina Academy 2-0 on Thursday with game scores of 25-13 and 25-20. Kelsie Austin had nine serve points and two aces, while Callie Thompson, Lindsey Barwick and Brooke Thompson each had three serve points.

WorkKeys testing free through Sept. 30

The ACT WorkKeys tests are changing. Through Sept. 30, current WorkKeys assessments in Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Locating Information will be given at no charge starting at 8:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the F.E. DuBose Center at Central Carolina Technical College in Manning. Beginning Oct. 1, a new battery of tests will be offered, and a fee is likely. So, free WorkKeys testing ends Sept. 30. Adult Ed to hold evening program registration Monday

Senior Wolverines hope for winning season

East Clarendon High School senior Bryson McKenzie has been a starter on the Wolverines varsity football team since his sophomore year.
The offensive lineman has been with the program overall since his seventh-grade year and has been on the varsity team for four.
“I’ve started ever since my 10th-grade year,” he said. “I just keep trying to push the guys and make them better to get them a starting position. This is my last ride, my one last shot.”

Swampcat rookies glad to hit the field

Will Ward has been an offensive lineman for the Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Swampcats’ football team.
This year, he will join varsity, along with Shayne Stephens, an offensive lineman.
“I am trying to learn and figure out what I can do to help,” Ward said.
Stephens agreed, saying that he “wants to be as good as I can in order to help us win.”

Senior eagle looks at new leadership role on football team

Ty’Quarius Brown had to transition from linebacker to safety when he switched to the Scott’s Branch High School varsity Eagles two years ago after transferring from Lakewood High School.
“I had to get better at the fundamentals,” he said. “This year, I had to step up a lot. I had to really become a leader this year Coach (Wayne) Farmer didn’t have anyone to depend on, so he’s really looking at me to be a leader this year.”
