Mitchell Carodine Cottingham, 99, widower of Virginia Lee DuBose Cottingham, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, at Covenant Place in Sumter.

Born Sept. 16, 1917, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Mitchell Carodine Cottingham Sr. and Mary Guess Cottingham. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II, a past post commander of the American Legion and a Mason. He was the owner and operator of Cottingham Insurance Agency, and he served on the board of directors of SCANA Investors. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning, where he served as a deacon and as an elder.

Survivors include a daughter, June Cottingham Briggs (Robert) of Manning; two sisters, Marilyn Summers (Tom) of Columbia and Margaret Smith (Fritz) of Kingstree; a sister-in-law, Beth DuBose Cottingham of Kingstree; two grandsons, Robert Edward Briggs III (Amy) of Manning and Mitchell Cottingham “Coty” Briggs (Aften) of Greer; and six grandchildren, Grace, Mitchell, Carol Ann, Rob, Jake and Mary Charlotte.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mora Elizabeth Cottingham; a stepmother, Mary Lee Cole Cottingham Boyd; two sisters, Juanita Gordon and Doris Lee McCants; and five brothers, Elton, Wallace, J.D., Sam and Walter Cottingham.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, at the Presbyterian Church at Manning, with the Rev. Dr. George Wilkes officiating. Burial will follow in the Manning Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1052 Perch Drive in Manning.
