Capt. Billy "B.K." Floyd has assumed the leadership of South Carolina Highway Patrol Troop 1, which features his home county. A resident of Turbeville, Floyd will lead a troop that patrols Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Richland and Sumter counties. Floyd was one of three South Carolina law enforcement officers to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, a 10-week program from which he graduated on March 17. Only 1 percent of the nation's law enforcement officers have completed the program. In his new role, Floyd replaces Capt. Rickie D. Grubbs, who was assigned to a newly created post of "liaison unit commander." Born in Orangeburg, Floyd moved to Turbeville when his father, Dr. B.K. Floyd Sr., became superintendent of Clarendon School District 3. He attended Presbyterian College after graduation from Clover High School in York County, playing for the college's baseball team. He transferred to the University of South Carolina and grauated with a degree in marketing and management. He first applied for the patrol in 1994, but a hiring freeze would keep him out of the agency until three years lter. Floyd was not the only promotion by the agency made Friday. Capt. Stacey Craven was put in charge of Troop 3, which patrols Anderon, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens and Spartanburg counties.
