A 42-year-old Pennsylvania man was arrested about 9:49 p.m. Aug. 3 in Manning for outstanding warrants for trafficking heroin in his home state. According to reports from the Manning Police Department, John Wesley Miller, 43, of 741 E. Walnut St. in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was initially stopped because his vehicle had only one headlight working. Police asked the driver for his license, and he said he did not have one. Information received from dispatch showed that the suspect was wanted out of Pennsylvania for trafficking heroin. Police told the man they did not want to handcuff him in front of his children, who were passengers in the car, along with his wife, and asked him if he had any contraband on his person. Miller allegedly stated that he had two pills he takes for heroin addiction and a straw that he uses to ingest heroin; the straw was found to contain an off-white, powdery substance believed to be heroin. After the wife was informed of the situation, she told police that Miller handed her a Newport cigarette box and told her to hide it in her purse. Miller admitted that heroin found in the Newport box was his. Several pieces of blue wax paper with an off-white, powdery substance believed to be heroin were located in the box. Jail officials said that Miller was granted a $2,500 cash or $5,000 surety bond on the charges. However, reports indicate he will be held at the Clarendon County Detention Center pending extradition back to Pennsylvania.
