Jefferson Daniel Caraway Jr., 38, husband of Carla VandenHeuvel Caraway, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at LeConte Medical Center in Sevierville, Tennessee.

Born May 19, 1979, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Jefferson Daniel Caraway Sr. and Barbara Craft Caraway. He was employed by the South Carolina Department of Corrections for 20 years, having obtained the rank of captain.

He regularly attended Gateway Baptist Church. Daniel was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing and was a member of several hunting clubs.

Survivors include his wife; two children, Logan Bryce Caraway and Karlee Danielle Caraway; a sister, Jennifer Prescott (Michael); a father-in-law, C.R. VandenHeuvel; a mother-in-law, Mary VandenHeuvel; a brother-in-law, Paul VandenHeuvel (Kayla); a niece, Bailey Prescott; two nephews, Luke Prescott and Ryan VandenHeuvel; and several aunts, uncles and close cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Charles Ahtonen officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at 1615 Hartwell Drive in Sumter.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Take One Make One, TOMO Program, c/o SCDNR, P.O. Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202-0167.
