Clarendon Hall staffers spent part of their summer attending a healthcare provider workshop sponsored by the South Carolina Independent School Association.

SCISA Executive Director Larry Watt said Athletic Director Ritchie Way and Administrative Assistant Dawn Hodges, the latter of whom is in charge of medical matters at the school, completed the Hazards, Emergencies, Links, Procedures and Safety Program.

"HELPS' main areas of focus are just as it says in the acronym: hazards, emergencies, links, procedures and safety," said SCISA Executive Director Larry Watt.

He said topics covered included the treatment of injuries and illnesses as seen in the office and by coaches; blood-borne pathogen updates, including OSHA regulations and SCISA accreditation requirements; proper handling of psycho-pharmaceuticals and all controlled substances; medical forms (participants shared and reviewed samples); emergency and everyday communications; proper routing of information; playground safety; and staph infections.

“This is just one of the many programs SCISA offers our schools,” Watt said. “We feel this training is very important because some schools don’t have registered nurses on their staffs.”

The South Carolina Independent School Association is a non-profit, voluntary association of over 120 independent schools serving more than 37,000 teachers and students.

Founded in 1965, the State of South Carolina incorporated SCISA as an exclusively educational organization with the responsibilities of establishing accreditation standards, coordinating academic and athletic competition and providing professional development for member organizations.
