Posted
Seven Clarendon County residents were among 38 new nurses pinned Wednesday during a ceremony held by Central Carolina Technical College at the Sumter Opera House in Sumter. The pinning ceremony traces its roots back more than 130 years to Florence Nightingale. Since the early days of Nightingale’s “Training School for Nurses,” it has been a tradition for nursing graduates to be pinned upon their successful graduation. Those pinned from Clarendon County included Courtney Benjamin, Mayce Chandler, Carmen C. Mullins, Azuree D. Page, Kristy Smith, Paula Snyder and Tiffany P. Thames. The Health Sciences Division offers an associate degree in nursing; diplomas in medical assisting and surgical technology; and certificates in massage therapy, medical record coding, patient care technology and phramcy technology. Health Sciences programs are designed to provide graduates with immediate employment in the healthcare industry or prepare graduates to transfer to articulating colleges. Graduates of the associate degree nursing program are prepared for careers as technical nurses in acute care, long-term care or home health settings. The ADN program prepares graduates to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and is approved by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) Board of Nursing. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredits the program. Other pinned included E.J. Callaham of Aiken County; Deanne L. Capers and Allison Godwin, both of Florence County; Gabrielle A. Blakeney, Catherine E. Charles, Ashley Danzy, Brandy V. Sys and Teresa Williams, all of Kershaw County; Megan Campbell of Lee County; and Michelle Wrigley of Richland County. Sumter County graduates included Christina A. Alustiza, Ronald Arsenault, Kelly Barfield, Brandi Bradford, Lena Brennan, Brittany Casey, Lindsey Howard, Evonne Isaac, Allison Keefer, Autumn M. LaMontagne, Takayla Liburd, Jessica Malone, Tiffani M. Mayes, Nasheeta McIntosh, Erica P. McLeod, Rebecca Napier, Theresa Queen, Gloria H. Riggs, Daphne N. Thomas, Phyllis A. Walker and Angie Ziegler.
