District 1 names interim superintendent

Clarendon School District 1 has appointed its former assistant superintendent of instruction and federal and state programs to be interim superintendent after the resignation and retirement of former superintendent Dr. Rose Wilder. Barbara Ragin Champagne has more than 35 years of experienced as an educator, serving with Clarendon School District 1 in her previous roles since 2008. "Having observed Mrs. Ragin Champagne in her role as assistant superintendent, the board believes that she has the necessary qualifications and experience to serve in the capacity of the position required," said Board Chairman Tony Junious. Ragin Champagne was appointed July 20, the same day Wilder announced her resignation. Wilder had been with the district since October 2004. She had previously served as superintendent of both Clarendon School District 2 and the Fairfield School District. Chapagne said in a release that she is committed to the board's mission "of absolute focus on student achievement; effective teaching practices; transparency of operations; fiscal accountability; and parent and community engagement." "What a remarkable privilege is is to continue to serve the students and citizenry of this historic school district in yet another capacity," she said. "I am honored and humbled by the confidence the board has in my ability to continue the building on the outstanding legacy of my predecessor, Dr. Rose H. Wilder." Ragin Champagne has a bachelor's degree in history from the University of South Carolina; a master's of teaching from Winthrop University; and a master's of educational administration from Scranton University. Se is an elder and clerk of session for Goodwill Presbyterian Church, recording clerk for New Harmony Presbytery and is completing course requirements to serve as a Presbyterian lay minister. She is also a published author, with her book titled "A Taste of Living Water."
