Shania Campbell will be 14 on July 24.

Instead of a party, she asked her parents if she could celebrate by visiting the patients at Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.

"The hospital said that we couldn't do that," said mom Kathy Shuler. "But she still had a heart to help."

Unable to visit the children, Shania decided to raise money for presents for them. She joined her mother, father Kenneth Shuler, and members of her church this week at several locations, raising more than $500 for her cause.

"I'm donating toys to the Palmetto Children's Hospital as my birthday gift," Shania said. "So we've been taking up donations to buy them toys. We baked brownies and cookies, and we're giving those away, along with water."

Shania and volunteers fro her church, The Embassy of King Christ Jesus in Manning, at Simpson Hardware, Advance Auto and IGA, all in Manning, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, respectively.

She raised $172.76 on Wednesday and had about $300 by late Thursday afternoon.

"I always had a special place for sick kids, so I decided I want to help them and get their minds off being in the hospital," Shania said. "I wanted to give them something to help them. I want to thank those who came out to help, including Tamekia Holmes and Lynn Shuler (her aunt) and Stephanie and Katiyah Mack."
