I bet you have been on a party line before. You remember picking up the telephone and heard other people talking. Sometimes you had a blabbermouth on your exchange. They talked all the time. It was fun to but in and tell them you had to make an emergency telephone call.
Sometimes it was just fun to pick up the phone and listen to their conversations. It was the greatest thing ever if you had an illicit affair going on and the culprits talked on the telephone.

John Benjamin Raffield III, husband of Dr. Kay R. Raffield, died Monday, June 19, 2017, at Palmetto Health Tuomey in Sumter.
Born Nov. 18, 1938, he was the son of the late Christine Lybrand Raffield and John Benjamin Raffield Jr. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Patsy Bullock Raffield.

New Zion man charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor younger than 11

A 23-year-old New Zion man was granted a $30,000 surety bond June 8 after his arrest a day earlier for first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim younger than 11 years of age.
According to warrants filed by the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office, Damon Demetric McClinton of 1040 Linden St., Lot 8, in New Zion, allegedly “committed the offense with a minor … in sexual battery with a female minor child by touching her inner thigh area above her clothes and then touching her private spot under her clothes.”

The National Weather Service out of Columbia has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook, calling for showers and thunderstorm activity Tuesday that could lead to locally heavy rainfall amounts and the potential for localized flooding.

For Clarendon Hall salutatorian Gabby Hill, there was just one question on her mind when she and her classmates walked to receive their diplomas May 25 at the school.

Man likely to be deported after being charged with forcing girl to have sex with him

A 46-year-old man charged earlier this month with criminal sexual conduct will be deported after he is turned over to immigration officials at the Clarendon County Detention Center.
Isidro Beltran of 1058 Sunshine Acres in Turbeville was charged June 9 with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor where the victim was younger than 11 years of age and third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor by the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office.

Shirley Bodie Watkins, 81, widow of Bernard Watkins, died Friday, June 16, 2017, at Sumter Health and Rehab.
Born in Berkeley County, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Edith Bryant Bodie. She was a homemaker and a member of Crosswell Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy B. Able of Minnesota, Patsy B. Skipper of Florence and Edith B. Manning native to appear on Cooking Channel show tonight

Manning native Howard Conyers is an aerospace engineer with NASA.
He has a Ph.D., has served as a lecturer in his field and now lives in New Orleans.
But this week, he will be showing off his culinary skills when he appears 9 p.m. today on the Cooking Channel’s “Man Fire Food.”
Conyers specialty when wearing an apron is whole-hog barbecue. The pitmaster couldn’t share too many details about his appearance on the show before it airs, but said it includes his passion for Carolina whole-hog barbecue, along with its history.
