Sheriff warns of phone scam

Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley is warning residents about suspects allegedly tricking unsuspecting victims by "soliciting donations on behalf of the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association via the telephone." "Please be reminded that the South Carolina Sheriff's Association does not ask for donations via the telephone," Baxley said. "Our honorary membership program is conducted exclusively through a direct-mail campaign, not through telephone conversations." Baxley said he did not want anyone to become a victim through "their innocent desire to help the association." "Any request for funds for the Sheriffs' Association via the telephone is fraud," a release from the association stated.
