A 29-year-old Lake City man was arrested about 3 p.m. June 17 and charged with third-degree burglary, first offense, and forgery of a value less than $10,000. According to reports from the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office, Gary Elbert Welch of 1589 Floyd Drive in Lake City, allegedly entered a store in the county and cashed a check for $80 written on an account of an undisclosed victim. The clerk working in the store told deputies that she knows the victim and that he was out of town for the weekend. She said she called the victim, who said the subject "had to break into his office to get the check." Deputies reported that the office door had been forced open "with what looks like a pry bar." Deputies were able to locate the suspect, and he allegedly admitted on camera that he broke into the office and cashed the check. Welch posted two personal recognizance bonds worth $5,000 on June 19 to gain his release from the Clarendon County Detention Center.
