TURBEVILLE - Mary Ellen Coker Brigman, 88, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at her home after an illness.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at Olanta Presbyterian Church, with burial in the Coker Family Cemetery in Turbeville, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta.

The family will greet friends prior to the funeral service at the church from 1 to 3 p.m.

Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late William Luther Coker Sr. and Maggie Lavinia Morris Coker.

She retired as a teacher from the South Carolina public school system after 30 years and was "Teacher of the Year."

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Clarendon County Mental Health Association, Meals on Wheels, Turbeville Zoning Committee, Ruitan, Olanta Garden Club and was a member of Olanta Presbyterian Church where she served on the Presbyterian Women of the Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Williard Henry Brigman Sr.; a son, Williard "Buddy" Henry Brigman; and brother-in-law, John Hall.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Margaret Brigman (Peggy) of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Rebecca Thies (Charles) of Fairfax, Virginia, and Gertrude Hall of Turbeville; and three brothers, Morgan B. Coker (Helen) and Dr. Steven N. Coker (Joanne), both of Florence, and William Luther Coker Jr. (Gloria) of Newport News, Virginia.
