What a night! What a crowd! The 2nd annual Dancing with the Stars is in the books. What a night it was. The Williamsburg Hospital Foundation raised nearly $80,000 with the added benefit of fun and merriment for everyone involved.
Lee Welch was the picture of sartorial refinement in a dinner jacket and provided fast-paced master of ceremonies duty. He first introduced the hardest working ladies, Lindsay McClam and Rebecca Bradford, who provided all the thankless groundwork to make this event a success.
This year's Dancing with the Stars honored Dr. Harry Floyd, who has served the people of Williamsburg County with excellent health care since 1970. He also served on the Williamsburg Regional Hospital Board for 34 years. Twenty-eight years were as chairman.
The festivities quickly started with a solo dance by Ashlee Coker.
The judges were introduced, and we were blessed with last years’ judges, Rebekah Hughes, Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill and Stephen Goldfinch. They provided expert commentary and entertaining comments about all the dancers.
W.C. Henryhand and pro-dancer Shandi Cox revved the crowd with "Super Freak." W.C. was even dressed as Rick James. They gave new meaning to "getting your Freak on."
Dr. Troy Gamble said he was in medical school during the disco era and spent his time studying rather dancing disco. Kaylee Hubbard is either the best dance instructor ever, or Dr. Gamble didn’t spend all his time studying. They picked out a good song for a doctor. They danced to "Stayin’ Alive."
Caroline Birchler and Josh Romero did a hip hop routine that the judges deemed “smokin' hot." The glitter lipstick only added to the song selection, "That’s What I Like."
David Ipock impressed everyone with fancy footwork that David has not done in years. Sydney Smith’s instruction was evident in keeping David moving.
Stanley Pasley and Lauren Nettles began their rendition of "Disco Inferno" with moves that would rival a tag-team wrestling duo. We have it on good authority that their disco costumes came from the back of Stanley’s closet.
Kimberly Barr and Braydon Smith did the cha-cha. Kimberly had on an all fringe flapper dress and a Colgate smile.
D. Walters and Brandi Williamson delighted the crowd. Judge Stephen Goldfinch just wanted to know what was going through D’s mind when he pulled Brandi through his legs. After D’s routine several women rushed the stage to stuff dollar bills in D’s costume.
Brother and sister-act Kyle Smith and Winston Jarrett amazed with a combination of air work, flying splits and free style dancing.
Adrel Langley and Norman Howard provided a cha-cha number with lots of lifts and action and, of course, Adrel’s red flapper dress.
Evan Reynolds and Kaycee Weaver did a cha-cha number with synchronous moves. Kaycee claimed that Evan had come a long way.
The judges awarded first place to Kyle Smith and Winston Jarrett.
Second place went to Adrel Langley and Norman Howard.
Third place went to Evan Reynolds and Kaycee Weaver.
The Peoples' Choice awards went out based on money raised for the Foundation.
Adrel Langley and Norman Howard were in first place, having raised $20,800.
D. Walters and Brandi Williamson were in second place, having raised more than $10,000.
Evan Reynolds and Kaycee Weaver were in third place, having raised raising more than $10,000 also.
It was a great night for the hospital foundation and all the folks in Williamsburg County.
