John Wesley McKinney, 84, died Friday, May 26, 2017, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.
Born July 27, 1932, in Jordan, he was a son of the late Mellerson Cantey and Margaret Bowman Cantey.
The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Willie Mae Cantey, 12422 Raccoon Road in Manning.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.


Williamson receives Rotary scholarship

Laurence Manning Academy graduate William Williamson was one of four recipients last week of a Manning Rotary Club scholarship.
The son of Dickey and Michele Williamson and the grandson of Rotarian Ted Gardner, all of Manning, Williamson plans to study mechanical engineering in the Clemson Bridge program at Tricounty Technical College. He is employed with Coffey and McKenzie Law Firm and Pocotaligo Products. At LMA, he participated in Student Council and the varsity golf team and was a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club and other clubs and organizations.

750 homes without power in Clarendon County area

Duke Energy and Santee Electric Cooperative are reporting about 750 homes without power between the two in Clarendon County, from Davis Station and Jordan to the lake and out toward Foreston into Greeleyville in Williamsburg County. No estimated time of restoration has been provided.

Duke Progress Energy and Santee Electric Cooperative are reporting about 125 homes without power as of 9:47 p.m. in various locations in Clarendon County, including Davis Station, Jordan, the lake area and Turbeville.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for southern Clarendon County

The National Weather Service out of Columbia has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southern Clarendon County, effective through 10 p.m. Monday. At 9:24 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located 8 miles north of eastern Lake Marion, or nine miles south of Manning, moving east at 35 mph. The hazard includes 60 mph wind gusts and hail. Expect possible damage to roofs, siding and trees. Locations to be effected include Summerton.

A wreck with no injuries is currently blocking the intersection of Walker Gamble and Newman Branch roads in the eastern portion of Clarendon County, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for northern Clarendon County

The National Weather Service out of Columbia has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northern Clarendon County until 9:15 p.m. Monday. At 8:39 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located 10 miles east of South Sumter, moving east at 25 mph. The hazard includes 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Locations affected include Turbeville, New Zion and Sardinia-Gable.

Charlton Rhett Coker Jr., husband of Janet Palicka Coker, 58, died Friday, May 26, 2017.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 29, 2017, at Turbeville Southern Methodist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.
Visitation was held Sunday, May 28, 2017, at Floyd Funeral Home.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Charlton Rhett Coker Sr. and Shirley Dennis Coker. He was a retired paramedic with Clarendon County EMS. He was a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Edith Juanita Cain Ramsey Waiters, 80, wife of Robert “Bob” Lee Waiters, died Monday, May 29, 2017, at her home.
Born Nov. 18, 1936, in Jordan, she was a daughter of the late Edmond Cain and Mary Ellison Cain.

Jennis Nero, 57, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at McLeod Health Clarendon.
Born Nov. 18, 1959, in Olanta, he was a son of the late Sonny Boy Nero and Minnie Mae McCray Nero.
Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Samuel Burgess officiating; Elder Mary Nesmith presiding; and Evangelist Carial Gilbert assisting.
Services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
