A wreck with no injuries is blocking the roadway at the 132 northbound mile-marker on Interstate 95.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is reporting a wreck with a fatality at the 122 southbound mile-marker on Interstate 95 near Alcolu. The wreck reportedly happened about 8:34 p.m. No further information is available at this time. Manninglive.com will have an update when more information is available.

2 Clarendon students graduate from Coastal Carolina University

Two Clarendon area students were among more than 1,145 candidates for graduation at Coastal Carolina University on May 5-6 at the HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center in Conway.
Those from Clarendon included Turbeville resident Brandon Shaw, who received a bachelor of arts in elementary education, cum laude; and Summerton resident Phyllis Watford, who received a bachelor of science degree in nursing.
Commencement speaker Amber J. Campbell encouraged graduates to be true to themselves and their own course in life, instead of relying too much on conventional wisdom.

John Ralph Connelly

John Ralph Connelly, 88, husband of Mildred L. “Millie” Connelly, died Thursday, May 11, 2017, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born Aug. 8, 1928, in Medford, Long Island, New York, he was a son of the late Joseph Patrick Connelly and Mary Margaret Hart Connelly. He was a retired plumbing supervisor with the Brookhaven National Laboratories. He was a life member of the Medford Fire Department, a member of the Medford Lions Club for 35 years and the treasurer of Happy Seniors Golf Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Catholic faith.

For Larki Parks, Manning High School Coach Karen “Kay” Young will always be “bigger than life.”
“She had the persona that it took to be great,” said Parks. “She might not have had the greatest players all the time, but she was a great coach.”
Young will retire at the end of the 2016-17 school year as a coach and teacher with Manning High School after more than three decades with Clarendon School District 2.

Kennedy to represent Monarch track team at 3A State Championships

Manning High School senior Karisma Kennedy will represent the Monarchs Saturday as the only member of the track team to qualify for the 3A State Track Championship meet. Kennedy placed fourth in the girls’ 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.38 over the weekend at the Lower State Track Qualifier Meet held at Bishop England. She will compete against other qualifiers Saturday at Spring Valley High School.

Law may close state’s public records law loopholes

Legislation closing loopholes in South Carolina’s open records law is poised to becoming law without a “crown jewel” provision that would have made it easy and inexpensive for people to force obstinate government agencies to turn over public documents.
An 89-0 vote Thursday in the House sent the bill to Gov. Henry McMaster. He says he’ll sign it, capping a seven-year effort to strengthen public access to government records.
The Senate approved the bill hours earlier after stripping out the section creating a state hearing officer to settle disputes over requested information.

Man seeking donations for Camp Happy Days

Bill Ellis is looking for your donations to help out with Camp Happy Days, which is held annually during the first week in July. This great event provides a fun camp atmosphere for children ages 4 to 16 who are either dealing with cancer themselves or who are the siblings of those dealing with cancer. It is a chance for the kids to get away from the doctors and the hospitals and, most importantly, the parents. Hazardous Weather Outlook calls for possible strong thunderstorms, winds and hail

The National Weather Service out of Columbia has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Clarendon County and surrounding areas for daytime and nighttime on Friday. Low pressure and a cold front will approach from the west this afternoon and tonight with potential for strong to severe thunderstorms.
The main threat of severe thunderstorms will be late this afternoon through early tonight, with damaging winds and hail possible.


Legislators override governor’s veto

A bill raising taxes and fees to repair South Carolina’s crumbling highways became law Wednesday over Gov. Henry McMaster’s veto after House leaders blasted the Republican governor as failing to provide leadership on the state’s top priority.

The override votes – 95-18 in the House and 32-12 in the Senate – culminated a three-year legislative effort, backed by business and trucking groups, to find a reliable revenue stream for repairing South Carolina’s unsafe roadways and bridges.

GREENVILLE – Pinckney Montgomery, 71, died Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Regency Hospital in Greenville.
Born Oct. 1, 1945, in Paxville, he was a son of the late James “Fine” Montgomery and Mary Dinkins Montgomery.
