The ladies of Women Involved in Rural Electrification at Santee Electric Cooperative selected A Second Chance Animal Shelter of Manning as their charity for the month of April. The ladies collected $145 worth of cleaning supplies and animal items.

Laurence Manning Academy junior Logan Moore is one of six young women who will attend the 71st Palmetto Girls State session to be held at Presbyterian College from June 11-17.
Moore is being sponsored by the American Legion Post No. 68 Auxiliary of Manning. Delegates selected to attend Palmetto Girls State are chosen based on individual qualities such as character, leadership ability and interest in government. A review of honors, awards, extra- circular activities, employment history and civic and church involvement are considered in the selection process.

Olanta woman killed in wreck

An Olanta woman was killed late Saturday afternoon after a vehicle wreck in Florence County.
Katherine Jordan Floyd, 81, of Olanta, died at McLeod Regional Medical Center after the wreck, which happened about 5:02 p.m. Saturday at North Floyd and North Bethel roads in the Olanta area near the Florence-Clarendon line.
Lance Cpl. David Jones with the S.C. Highway Patrol said a 2007 Nissan truck went off the side of the road and struck a ditch, and Floyd was a passenger in that truck. The driver was taken by EMS to McLeod Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Fire destroys St. Paul home

A fire that destroyed about 80 percent of a St. Paul area home late Saturday night likely started in the home’s kitchen, according to Clarendon County Fire Chief Frances Richbourg.
“No one was home at the time, and no one was injured,” Richbourg said late Sunday night of the fire, which began about 11 p.m. Saturday. “We were out there for about two or three hours, and the family had a significant loss.”
Richbourg said that, by the time firefighters arrived, the fire had “taken control of the attic.”

LMA baseball, softball teams to begin defending state titles Monday at home

Laurence Manning Academy’s varsity baseball and softball teams will begin defending their AAA State Championship titles on Monday night at home. The Lady Swampcats will play 5 p.m. against Wilson Hall, while the Swampcats will play 7 p.m. against Cardinal Newman. Entry for both games is $8 for adults, $4 for students, and booster club passes will not be accepted.
