Manning woman charged in NC man’s death faces more charges in two other shootings

A Manning woman charged Thursday for her alleged role in the death of a Charlotte man faces more than a murder charge.
Shenika Yvonne James, 35, was charged with murder last week in the killing of 24-year-old Jarel D’Shaun Grace by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Grace was found shot and lying in the front yard of a house along the 4100 block of Colebrook Road in Charlotte on April 1.

Lowder chosen by Black River legion for Boys State

Laurence Manning Academy junior Carson Woodard Lowder is one of five young men chosen by Black River Post No. 149 of New Zion to participate this summer in the American Legion Palmetto Boys State at Anderson University.
Lowder, the son of Chuck and Debbie Lowder of Pamplico, will attend Boys State from June 1-17. At Laurence Manning Academy in Manning, he plays varsity football and is on the golf team. He is a member of the Beta Club and the National Honor Society and is a Relay for Life volunteer.

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued for Clarendon County

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Clarendon County and surrounding areas like Williamsburg and Orangeburg counties effective Monday through Wednesday. The outlook calls for isolated, urban flooding starting Monday with slow-moving, strong storms, which are possible through Wednesday.

The following guilty pleas were heard before 3rd Circuit Court Judge George McFadden during a term of General Sessions Court in Clarendon County held from May 8 to 12 at the Clarendon County Courthouse.
William Lemoin Armstrong II of 287 Tiger Lily Road in Sumter pleaded guilty May 12 to receiving stolen goods of a value more than $2,000, but less than $10,000, receiving a sentence of five years in prison, suspended to 18 months’ probation.

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Jermaine Witherspoon, 35, died Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Yale Hospital in New Haven, from injuries sustained in a vehicle wreck.
Born Sept. 4, 1981, in Norwalk, Connecticut, he was a son of Steve Hills and the late Eunice Blackwell Witherspoon. He was raised by his uncle and aunt, Heyward and Elouise Blackwell Moses.

Lawerence A. Waiters, 78, husband of Mary Ida Nelson Waiters died Saturday, May 20, 2017, at McLeod Health Clarendon.
Born Oct. 8, 1938, in Manning, he was a son of the late Dove Waiters and Mary Lee Mack Waiters.

Leroy “Bird” Johnson, 88, widower of Julia Hammett Johnson, died Friday, May 19, 2017, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Sumter.
Born Sept. 6, 1928, in Manning, he was a son of the late Chappell Johnson and Annie Louise Stukes Johnson.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2017, at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Terry Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Florence National Cemetery in Florence.
The family will receive friends starting Wednesday at the home, 1670 DuRant Lane in Manning.
Services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.


3 men plead guilty in robbery of Sumter man

Three Manning men held since their arrests in March for their roles in the armed robbery of a 38-year-old Sumter man at a local gas station have all been sentenced in Clarendon County General Sessions Court.
Markel Antonio Dennis, 19, of 305 Major Drive in Manning, Tykeem Davon Bradley, 17, of 1383 Meagen Lane in Manning and Dominic Javon White, 17, of 504 S. Blackwell named to Newberry College Spring Dean’s List

Devin Blackwell of Manning was named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester at Newberry College. Students receiving recognition on the Dean’s List at Newberry College had to achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0-scale during the semester. Blackwell was one of 293 Newberry students to receive this honor.
