Library gears up for summer literacy programs, reading clubs

School is nearly out for the summer, and the Harvin Clarendon County Library in Manning will begin its annual reading clubs from June through July. The library hopes the reading clubs will help alleviate the diminished reading and spelling skills that many school children suffer during the summer months. Circulation Specialist Rhonda Johnston works in the children’s department of the library, which belongs to a group called South Carolina Lends. “If a customer needs a book that we do not have, we will request it for the customer, who may pick up their book via courier,” she said. “The summer reading program is designed with the entire family in mind. There are prizes and ribbons to be earned. The adults will qualify to be entered in the drawing at the end of the program. The Early Literacy Club is designed for children ages 3 and younger. Reader’s Club caters to children ages 4-12, with the program keeping track of how many books the student reads or listens to. Along with prizes, a free book and the South Carolina Reading Medal will be awarded to each child completing the program. The Teen Club is for students ages 12-18, and also keeps track of how many books students read or listen to. There is an option to earn prizes, a free book and a chance for a grand prize drawing for an Amazon gift card. The Adult Club is designed for those 19 and older. It also keeps track of how many books are read or listened to, and also takes into account readers watching films based on books. Again, readers may earn prizes and a chance in the grand prize drawing for an Amazon gift card. The clubs will run from June 1 through July 31.
