UPDATE: Local law enforcement officers remember slain deputy

A Summerton native was shot and killed Tuesday morning near Three Forks, Montana, where he was serving as a deputy with the local Sheriff's Office.

Dep. Mason Moore had been with the Broadwater County Sheriff's Office for three years.

The Galltin County Sheriff's Office said two suspects, Marshall Barrus, 38, of Gallatin County, and Lloyd Barrus, 62, of Bakersfield, California, are in custody. Moore reportedly stopped the father and son duo about 3 a.m. Tuesday near Three Forks.

Moore had called the incident into dispatchers, but then never called back in. A Gallitin County deputy then responded and found Moore dead at the scene.

A statewide Be On the Lookout (BOLO) was issued and the Montana Highway Patrol eventually spotted the pair's vehicle near Anaconda, Montana. A pursuit began on Interstate 90 and the vehicle was spike-stripped at mile-marker 162 in Powell County, but was able to continue on the interstate.

About 35 miles east of Missoula, Montana, the suspects began firing at law enforcement, and the vehicle came to rest east of Rock Creek.

Both suspects fled the vehicle, shooting at law enforcement. One was shot and transported to a local hospital, though authorities did not identify whether it was the older or the younger suspect.

Moore previously served as a deputy with the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office. He was one of the lead investigators who interrogated Justin Jermaine Johnson in 2011 when the Scott's Branch High School graduate killed his girlfriend's grandmother and the couple's child off of June Burn Road.
