Senior Correctional Officer Daishawn Pearson was just going through the regular course of his duties on day shift at the Clarendon County Detention Center on March 21 when a pre-trial detainee was found with a handcuff key.

"It was a routine search," said Detention Center Director Shelton Hughes. "Through (Pearson's) systematic, thorough search of the inmate, we were able to seize that key and avoid any harm that the individual could have caused had he had the opportunity to carry out his plan."

Hughes said that the inmate was at the jail for a homicide and armed robbery trial, and that he had been housed at a different facility.

"In returning to Clarendon from his holding agency, he had obtained a handcuff key similar to the one we use," said Hughes. "He intended to use that key at some point."

Hughes honored Pearson during the most recent meeting of Clarendon County Council, who also presented the officer with a framed certificate recognizing his achievements.

"He has recovered numerous items of contraband, including illegal pills and other items during the intake process," said Hughes. "His actions have led to numerous prosecutions of the delivering agencies. He is one of the top contraband seizing officers in our staff. He is keeping the staff, visitors and inmates safe during the course of his duties."
