Now they tell us about the salt

Hey, did you hear the news about salt? Now they’re saying that salt doesn’t cause your blood pressure to go up, and it is not bad for your heart. Now isn’t that just wonderful? Where has this news been? For the last 30 years, people have been telling me not to put salt on anything. Salt tastes good. It adds flavor to food. Who comes up with this stuff, and can I really believe it? I had a doctor tell me once to quit worrying about salt and get more calcium in my diet. The next time I went to see him, he told me to get more potassium in my diet. The last time I visited him he started telling me about sodium, calcium and potassium. He was called to the hospital before he could make any sense to me. My in-laws used salt in just about everything they cooked. Sometimes they would mention the evils of salt but used it in all the food. They lived a long time, so maybe the salt wasn’t bad for them. I’m not sure where all this information comes from. Supposedly, people are doing scientific experiments to find out if all this true. Maybe all these reports are just advertisements to get you looking at something else to buy. “Stop using salt and use this miracle flavoring additive.” “It’s good for your blood pressure and your heart, too.” I met a guy once that barbecued a hog every weekend. He said pork was good for you. He pulled out a card and showed me the name of a doctor from the Medical University of South Carolina. He told me I should call this doctor, and he would tell me the truth about the different things I ate. The card just had a name and telephone number on it. It didn’t say anything about the guy being a doctor or working at the Medical University. I thought something was strange about that. Supposedly, all his studies proved that smoking a pack of cigarettes and drinking a six-pack of beer per day would not be bad for you. I never got to talk to that guy, but I didn’t take any of that advice either. I try not to take much of this kind of advice. It seems that every time I go to the doctor, they perform another blood test and come up with something else that could be wrong with me. I think I’ve been tested for all the sodium, calcium and potassium stuff. No one has mentioned salt lately. I think they told me to lay off that years ago. Now I can go back to salting my food and not suffer any harmful effects. That’s good news. Another friend told me that there is nothing that salt won’t make test better. I'm not sure if he thought about apple pie and ice cream, but he put salt on everything else. Maybe it’s time for me to quit taking all these blood tests and just eat what I want. How bad can it be? I think we test too much on all these blood samples. My lawyer called me up the other day and told me he had some good news and bad news for me. He told me there was a sample of my blood at a murder scene. There was also a sample of my blood on the murder weapon and on the murder victim. I told him that was terrible, and what could be the good news? “Well, your cholesterol is down.”
