Santee man found dead at Lizzie Creek dock

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for a 68-year-old Santee man who was found dead late Tuesday evening in the Lizzie Creek area of Lake Marion in Clarendon County.
Deputy Coroner Bucky Mock said the body of Gregory Craven will be taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston on Friday for an autopsy.
“He builds docks for a living and he was working on a dock for someone on our side of the lake,” said Mock of the Santee resident. “We are not sure what happened to him at this time.”

JV Lady Swampcats defeat Wilson Hall

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats defeated Wilson Hall in four innings by a score of 8-0 on Tuesday night. Cakhi Fowler led the team on the mound, giving up only two hits and striking out four and walking two players. She was also 2-3 with a triple, two runs and also had three RBI. Eaddy Osteen was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI. Breanna Boykin was 2-1 and McKenzie Truett was 2-1 with an RBI. Randi Lynn Holcombe was 2-2.


Parkinson’s Support Group to meet May 9

The Florence-area Parkinson’s Disease Support Group will meet 5:30-6:30 p.m. May 9 at 121 E. Cedar St. in Florence. Dr. Amy Delambo of the Medical University of South Carolina’s Movement Disorders Program will be the guest speaker on Parkinson’s and sleep issues. CDC to hold Gigantic Yard Sale, iPad drawing

The Clarendon County Community Development Corporation will hold a gigantic yard sale and iPad drawing from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6 next to the Clarendon County Council on Aging on South Church Street. Participants in the drawing do not have to be present to win. There will be men, women and children’s clothes, housewares and other items at the yard sale. Man found dead in Summerton area near lake

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office responded earlier to reports of a man found dead in the water off his dock in the Summerton area near Lake Marion.
Deputy Coroner Bucky Mock said late Tuesday night that the man’s identity is being withheld pending the notification of his family. He said that Clarendon County Sheriff’s deputies were called out to the area about 6 p.m., and that the Coroner’s Office was called about two hours later.
“There’s not a lot of information that I can give out at this time,” he said.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louie Dennis Smith of Greenville, and the maternal granddaughter of James Clarence McHale and the late Trudy Love Beach McHale of Greenville and the late Vernon Lloyd Beach of Walterboro. She is the paternal granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Howard Smith of Greenville.

Clarendon Hall fourth-graders visit Camp Leopold

Clarendon Hall teacher Evelyn Shuler led the school’s fourth-graders on Monday on a field trip to Camp Leopold, which is operated by the South Carolina Waterfowl Association at Camp Woodie in Rimini. Despite the rain, the class learned about nature in the area, and school officials want to thank the Camp Leopold staff for the wonderful opportunity given to them.


189 homes without power in Clarendon, Sumter counties

Sam Peter Dukes Jr. 66, died Monday, April 24, 2017, at his home, 2023 Joseph Lemon and Dingle Road in Manning.
Born June 12, 1950, in Jordan, he was a son of the late Same Peter Dukes Sr. and Azalea McKinney Dukes.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Dukes, 6284 Moses Dingle Road in Jordan.

Chris Brunson and Noah Scurry won $2,000 and 3rd place in the Santee Cooper Open Team Fishing Tournament presented Saturday by Santee Ford Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Lake Marion as part of the 38th annual Striped Bass Festival. The pair was presented the check by Dennis Craven of Santee Automotive.


Turbeville to hold meeting on possible Rec Department merger with county

Turbeville Town Council will hold a meeting Wednesday to assess the “how and why” of possibly joining the town’s Recreation Department to the county’s, said Turbeville Town Administrator Rodney Johnson.
The meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Turbeville Town Hall.
“What we’re doing is more or less an informational meeting to talk about the possibility,” Johnson said. “The possibility is merging with the county program. We’re just going to talk about it.”
Johnson said that most of the kids who participate in Turbeville’s program don’t live within town limits.

$2,500 awarded to 2nd place in Striped Bass Fishing Tournament

Chuck Howard and Ken Ellis won 2nd place and $2,500 with a total of 27.11 pounds of fish in the Santee Cooper Open Team Fishing Tournament presented by Santee Ford Chyrsler Dodge Jeep Ram held Saturday on Lake Marion as part of the 38th Striped Bass Festival. Dennis Craven of Santee Automotive presented the check to the pair, who also took the $250 2nd place prize for Big Fish for 8.09 pounds. More than 200 fishermen participated in the one-day tournament held in conjunction with the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, and about $20,000 was paid out in prizes.
