James Atkinson Jr.

GREELEYVILLE – James “Stephen” Atkinson Jr., 53, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 27, 1963, in Florence, he was a son of Emma Sue Mouzon Atkinson and the late James Stephen Atkinson Sr. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors besides his mother of Greeleyville include a daughter, Heather Branham (Jeffrey); a son, Brandon Michael Atkinson (Amanda Grigg); two grandchildren, Holden and Lorelei Branham; a brother, Stacy Atkinson (Me-Ayn), all of Manning; and an aunt, Frances Howie of Davidson, North Carolina.

Pinewood man faces drugs, weapons charges after traffic stop

Kevin Lamont Slater, 36, of 1488 Guess road in Pinewood, was arrested about 2:16 a.m. April 23 and charged with possession of cocaine; possession of marijuana, second offense; and unlawful carrying of a pistol.
According to reports from the Manning Police Department, police stopped Slater in the area of West Huggins Street and Alfred Henry Drive after observing Slater drive left of center several times in his Buick.
As Slater exited the vehicle, when asked by police, he placed a rolled up $1 bill on the vehicle, and police found that it contained a “powder substance believed to be cocaine.”… Read the rest

SUMMERTON – The Rev. Franklin McCants Sr., 74, husband of Dorothy Mae McBride McCants, died Friday, April 21, 2017, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born April 16, 1943, in the Cypress Fork section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Arnold and Isabella Samuel McCants.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2017, at Spring Hill AME Church, 4309 Bill Davis Road in Summerton, with the Rev. Summerton Literacy Council to hold free event Saturday

The Summerton Literary Council will present “Literacy Saturday – Recapping the Week of the Young Child” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Clarendon School District 1 Community Resource Center at 1154 Fourth St. in Summerton.
The Harvin Clarendon County Mobile Library will be featured, along with healthy food tastings, live music, art and family photos.
The Summerton Literacy Council is comprised of local parents as well as leaders in businesses, education, social services and religious organizations. The council’s goal is to improve children’s early learning and literacy opportunities in Clarendon County.

Library to host production of ‘Three Little Pigs’

The Harvin Clarendon County Library and Porkchop Productions will hold “The Three Little Pigs” at 2 p.m. June 15 at the library, 215 N. Brooks St. in Manning. Development Board to meet at 5:30 p.m. today

The Clarendon County Development Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at the Clarendon County Administrative Building, 411 Sunset Drive in Manning.
In open session, the board will consider the Industry Appreciation Golf Tournament, a board vacancy appointment and a contractual matter. The board will hear updates on Amgo, ProBrass and Advanta as well as the Alcolu Industry and Technology Park.
The board will also receive an expense report and conduct an executive session on ongoing projects.

CDC to hold Gigantic Yard Sale, iPad drawing

The Clarendon County Community Development Corporation will hold a gigantic yard sale and iPad drawing from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6 next to the Clarendon County Council on Aging on South Church Street. Participants in the drawing do not have to be present to win. There will be men, women and children’s clothes, housewares and other items at the yard sale. Man attempts to cash $965 bad check at Manning store

A 37-year-old St. Matthews man allegedly attempted to cash a fraudulent check worth $965.02 about 11 a.m. April 20 at a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway, according to reports from the Manning Police Department.
An employee with the store told police that the man had left the check and an ID when told that the store wouldn’t be able to cash the check, and the ID was from Georgia.

There will be a blood drive in memory of Easton Ryland Mahoney from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 27 at The Zone in Manning. Easton, son of Donald Mahoney and Tonya Morris, passed away May 20, 2016, at just 4 months old.


JV Lady Saints defeat Jefferson Davis Academy

The Clarendon Hall junior varsity Lady Saints defeated Jefferson Davis Academy 6-2 on Tuesday, bringing their record to 13-1 on the season. Amberly Way hit a home run, leading the JV Lady Saints. Bailey Corbett, McKenzie Bagnal and Hadleigh McIntosh each had a hit and RBI.
