JV Lady Swampcats defeat Northwoods Academy

The Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity Lady Swampcats defeated Northwood Academy by a final score of 8-0 away from home on Thursday. Madison Truett had two hits for the team, while McKenzie Truett had a triple and an RBI. McKenzie Truett also scored two runs. Madisyn Hudson had one RBI.


Coroner’s Office: ‘No trauma’ in Santee man’s death on lake

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office will have to wait several weeks to know the cause of death for a man whose body was found off a Lizzie Creek dock on Tuesday evening.
Deputy Coroner Bucky Mock said Santee resident Gregory Craven, 68, was working on a dock “for someone on our side of the lake, and we’re not sure what happened to him at this time.”
Mock said Friday that an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina showed that there was no trauma to Craven’s body, and that his office will have to wait on a toxicology report … Read the rest


50 homes, businesses without power in downtown Manning

Duke Progress Energy is currently reporting about 50 homes and businesses in the downtown Manning area without power as of 2:59 p.m. Friday. No estimated time of restoration has been given at the moment.


Monarch track team competes in Region 7-AAA Championship

The Manning High School track team competed April 26 in the Region 7-AAA Championship held at Bishop England High School in Charleston. Mahogany Green took first place in both the long jump and the triple jump, with distances of 15-feet and 2 inches and 32-feet and 11 inches, respectively. David Fulton took first place in the long jump as well with a distance of 19-feet and 7 inches. JV Lady Saints defeat Jefferson Davis Academy

After a two-week break, the Clarendon Hall junior varsity softball team returned to action Tuesday with a win at Jefferson Davis Academy by score of 6-2. Sixth-grade student Amberly Way and eighth-grade student Bailey Corbett led the Lady Saints on offense, going 1-2 each with Way picking up her first career over-the-fence home run. Hadleigh McIntosh and McKenzie Bagnal were 1-3 each. Way, Corbett, McIntosh and Bagnal each had one RBI. The JV Lady Saints are now 13-1 on the season, and 10-1 in region play and will play Monday at Calhoun Academy.

Shirley McCray, 53, wife of Jimmy McCray, died Friday, April 21, 2017, at McLeod Health Clarendon
Born June 10, 1963, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Steady Edward Gordon and Margaret Felder Gordon.
Funeral services for Shirley McCray will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning. Burial will follow in Calvary Zion Cemetery in Pinewood.
The family will receive friends at the home of her aunt, Julia Singleton, 10350 S.C. 261 South in Pinewood.

Grace Christian Fellowship to hold Spring Yard and Bake Sale

Rowers flock to Camp Bob Cooper

Spring training season is winding down for Camp Bob Cooper’s sought after rowing retreat.
Rowers pack up and return home this weekend until the fall, when high school and college teams will return for a longer rowing instructional season.
The camp hosts teams frequently from the northeast during Spring Break. Mid-February through mid-April brings row teams from Massachusetts and New York to compete in regattas and train at the camp, as their lakes and waterways are still frozen during Easter Break.
Weekends are transition periods in which teams arrive for the program and leave to return to their home states. … Read the rest
