Turbeville to hold meeting on possible Rec Department merger with county

Turbeville Town Council will hold a meeting Wednesday to assess the "how and why" of possibly joining the town's Recreation Department to the county's, said Turbeville Town Administrator Rodney Johnson. The meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Turbeville Town Hall. "What we're doing is more or less an informational meeting to talk about the possibility," Johnson said. "The possibility is merging with the county program. We're just going to talk about it." Johnson said that most of the kids who participate in Turbeville's program don't live within town limits. "They're county residents, so it makes sense sooner or later that the idea would come up," he said. Asked if the program is a drain on the town's resources, Johnson said he wouldn't call it a "tremendous drain." "From our most recently completed audit, if you look at what we've spent on rec programs, it's about $153,355," he said. "Proceeds from athletic fees and everything else is $46,403. It's a general fund item. I don't think it's a drain, but those numbers speak for themselves."
