A 49-year-old Charleston man was charged about 5:32 p.m. April 7 with shoplifting of a value of $2,000 or less after allegedly taking about $310.77 worth of merchandise from a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway without paying for it.
According to reports from the Manning Police Department, Gerald Francis Wade Jr. of 991 Breakwater Court in Charleston entered the store and allegedly took that amount in groceries. Police were notified by employees that a suspect was leaving the parking lot in a grey Toyota Tacoma, and police spotted the vehicle as it was leaving the scene. Police also reported having unspecified outstanding warrants on Wade from an earlier incident.
Wade was immediately detained and told he was wanted. Police found a receipt where Wade had purchased ammunition from the store, but no receipt for the groceries in his truck.
A review of surveillance video from the store allegedly showed that Wade had not paid for the items.
