SUMMERTON - Lucy Carter, 69, widow of James William Carter, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at her home.

Born Dec. 12, 1947, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Vander and Evelyn Britton. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a devoted member of Historic Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton.

Survivors include eight children, Latanya Carter and Destiny Carter, both of the home, Mark Carter and Michelle Carter, both of Queens, New York, Lawrence Carter of Bronx, New York, Tony Carter of Sumter, Warren Carter of Columbia and Monique Carter of Paxville; a grandchild whom she reared as her own, Taylor A. Carter of Greenville; two aunts, Cora Lee Kimbrel Brown and Ann Britton, both of Bronx; two uncles, Thomas Britton and Vander Britton Jr., both of Bronx; two special friends, Christopher S. Wardlaw of Greenville and her neighbor, Essie Felder of Summerton; two additional children that she loved dearly, her pets, Smokey and Baby, both of the home; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton, with Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 7 First St. in Summerton.
