A 56-year-old Manning woman was released from the Clarendon County Detention Center March 17 after posting bond two days after her arrest for attempted murder. Joann Mitchell of 305 Collins St. in Manning was charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, all for which she was granted separate $500 surety bonds on March 15, the day of her arrest by the Manning Police Department. According to reports, a 52-year-old man living in the same home as Mithcell told police that Mithcell attacked him and a 37-year-old woman while wielding a machete. The man said he was able to disarm Mitchell and then he ran outside to await law enforcement. Reports indicate that, fearing Mitchell may still have been armed, police placed her against the wall to handcuff her upon their arrival. The female victim told police that Mitchell allegedly bit her during the altercation. The male victim also showed police a video he'd taken of the suspect allegedly attacking him. Reports do not indicate whether anyone was injured during the altercation, other than the female victim saying she was bitten. Mitchell faces up to 30 years in prison for each count of attempted murder, if convicted. She faces up to five years in prison for the charge of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. A background check with the S.C. Law Enforcement Division shows no prior criminal charges, other than minor traffic violations.
