Patriot Road home destroyed by fire

A family living on Patriot Road near Wyboo lost its home late Wednesday afternoon after a fire consumed the entire structure within a couple of hours.

Clarendon Fire Chief Frances Richbourg said the fire on the double-wide mobile home with an attachment was "well involved" when her firefighters got the call.

"The wind was very heavy out there, and it pushed it through the home fairly quickly," Richbourg said.

Richbourg said the family also lost a vehicle that caught fire in the home's back yard.

"We did protect other exposures, like a home next door," said Richbourg. "And there were no injuries."

Richbourg said estimates are not available yet, but she said the home is a "total loss."

"I'd say, and this would be a total guess, the loss is in excess of $75,000," she said. "But again, that's just a guess right now."

She said the American Red Cross had been notified about the family's loss. She said there were children in the home, but she was unsure at 7:30 p.m. when talking with The Manning Times of their ages or needs.

"Someone else is working with the family, but they did call the Red Cross," she said. "The Red Cross is taking care of them for us."

A cause was also not available.

"At this point, we have no idea what started it," she said. "We just got the fire put out and everything packed up. There's a lot of damage to the structure. There's no flooring left in a lot of it; there's just the metal framework."
