Man charged with larceny after allegedly taking $60 from cash register

A 46-year-old Summerton man was charged with larceny about 2:32 p.m. Nov. 4 after allegedly taking $60 from a cash register at a business in the 100 block of South Mill Street in Manning.
According to reports from the Manning Police Department, the business’ owner told police that he saw the suspect, Charles Anthony Hughes, enter the store, walk behind the counter and into the office where the cash register was located. The owner confronted the suspect before he could leave the premises, and said the suspect told him he was down on his luck and need the money.

Verizon: Cyber criminals targeting mobile customers

A scam is going around where cyber criminals are telling mobile customers to open a link to fix a breach of security on their phone, according to Verizone Wireless.
Verizon Wireless says its customers are receiving text messages telling them to open link to correct a security breach. The company says this is more likely a phishing method that allows the sender to retrieve data from customers.
Verizon says similar scams have been occurring using bank names. The company warns customers never open a link on your phone or computer that looks suspicious. Always be sure to verify the authenticity … Read the rest

Powerball jackpot swells to $403 million after no winner Wednesday

After no one came forward to claim multi-million dollar Powerball winnings, the lottery jackpot has grown to an even more sizable sum.
What could have been winning numbers for the one of the largest jackpots in Powerball history were drawn Wednesday night. Players will get a second chance at the lump of money now since no winners were named.
The Powerball jackpot is now up to $403 million.
As of Wednesday the odds of winning are about 1 in 292.2 million, but it’s not impossible.
Seven jackpot winning tickets have been sold in South Carolina, with the last in September


Judge: Defendant competent to stand trial in church shooting

The white man charged in the shooting deaths of nine black parishioners at a South Carolina church last year is competent to stand trial, a federal judge ruled Friday.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel’s decision clears the way for jury selection to restart Monday in the hate-crimes trial of 22-year-old Dylann Roof.

The judge had delayed the process of narrowing the final jury pool on Nov. 7 when Roof’s lawyers suggested their client either didn’t understand the charges against him or couldn’t properly help them with his defense. Charleston woman seeking family of Manning High Class of 1923 graduate

A Charleston woman turned to social media recently to find the family of an early 1900s high school graduate whose diploma she found at an estate sale in Walterboro.
Jeanette M. Neal said she found the diploma of Samuel Allan Rigby in a box she received from an estate sale.
“I would love to returning it to the family,” she said. “It says Manning High School, and Samuel Allan Rigby. The year was 1923.”

Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Turbeville will present its Christmas cantata, “Memories of a Merry Christmas,” at Sunday, with harpist Kipper Ackerman providing a prelude of Christmas music designed to get you in the holiday spirit starting at 3:30 p.m. A Walk to Bethlehem will immediately follow the cantata.
