Mary Kathryn Gatlin of Manning and Ryan Andrew Hulme of Sumter were united in marriage at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at First Baptist Church.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ward Gatlin of Manning, and the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Clarence Owen of Florence and the late Mr. and Mrs. George Arthur Gatlin of Conway. She graduated from the University of South Carolina. She is employed by Nicole Norris Design Studio in Sumter.

Sen. Johnson, Winn face off in NAACP forum

Sen. Kevin Johnson, D-Manning, and Republican challenger the Rev. Leon Winn faced off last week in a candidate forum hosted by the NAACP in Sumter, half of which is included in Senate District 36.
Manning native Johnson is hopeful that voters will give him his second Senate term come Nov. 8. The race is one of three being contested on the ballots that day, with Clarendon County Councilman A.C. English facing Republican opposition in District 2; and no less than six candidates running for three seats on the Clarendon School District 1 Board of Trustees.

Manning Rotary helps with highway clean-up

Members of the Manning Rotary Club came together Saturday to clean-up an adopted portion of roadway on S.C. 260 in Manning. Those who gathered in the chilly morning hours on Saturday to help included President Susan Anderson, Sergeant-at-Arms Amy Land, Louis Griffith, Badge Baker and Rabon Scott. Land, a 3rd Circuit Drug Court judge, also had several of her wards who have been assigned to Drug Court help with the cleanup.


Clarendon added to list for all categories of FEMA public assistance

Clarendon is one of eight additional counties approved Wednesday for all categories of public assistance to help municipalities and county agencies recover from Hurricane Matthew.
This assistance from FEMA enables state agencies, local governments and certain private non-profits to recoup costs for storm damage and response costs.
Joining Clarendon in this distinction are Calhoun, Charleston, Chesterfield, Darlington, Kershaw, Marlboro and Richland. Clarendon was just one week ago added to the list that allows residents and businesses to apply for individual assistance. Drought Response Committee updates drought statuses for counties statewide

The South Carolina Drought Response Committee, which is comprised of representatives from multiple state and local agencies, met via conference call Wednesday to update the drought statuses for all counties within the state.
According to information provided by SCDNR State Climatologist Hope Mizzell, some counties in the Upstate have received less than ten percent of normal rainfall throughout the last 60 days, intensifying the impacts to agriculture, increasing concern regarding forest fires and lowering streamflow and lake levels.

Johnson hosts Fish Fry at Morris College

Sen. Kevin L. Johnson joined Sumter Sheriff Anthony Dennis on Wednesday in hosting a fish fry at Morris College in Sumter. Both men are campaigning for re-election in their respective positions. Johnson is running for his second term in District 36, which covers the majority of Clarendon County, a large portion of Sumter County and parts of Darlington and Florence counties. Federal funding released to help families in South Carolina with heating and cooling costs

The Administration for Children and Families has released $31,670,297 to help low-income families in South Carolina stay warm during winter months, cool during summer months and make cost-effective home energy repairs.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which is run by the Office of Community Services at HHS’ Administration for Children and Families, provides funding to states, the District of Columbia, territories and tribes to assist households with paying energy bills and weatherize homes for energy improvements.
