Trick-or-Treating time set for Monday

Trick-or-Treating in Clarendon County and the City of Manning will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Children should be accompanied by parents or guardians at all time, wear reflective clothing and take flash lights. Also, do not eat candy until a parent has been able to inspect it. For more information, call the Manning Police Department at (803) 435-8859, or the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 435-4414.

The Noisy Ghost of Paxville

For years, the spooktacular story of the noisy ghost from Paxville has been passed down from generation to generation.

The story starts a long time ago, when Paxville was Packsland and Clarendon wasn’t a county. King George III of England gave land to the town’s three earliest settlers, Daniel Kelly from Ireland, Joseph Pack from England and a Mr. Bird from Scotland.

Dialysis and my obsession with musicals

I have always been obsessed with music.
There are those that use the phrase, “Music is my life,” but it’s a phrase I don’t like. Your life is your life. Music can be a big part of it, but nothing other than your life is your life.
But as close as I can get to that phrase in my mind, that’s how I am.

Voter Registration now open for absentee ballots

The Clarendon County Voter Registration Office, 411 Sunset Drive in Manning, is now open for absentee voting. Hour are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
To vote absentee, you must be a registered voter and meet one of the following criteria:
Students, their spouses and dependents residing with them;
Members of the Armed Forces, Merchant Marines, Red Cross, USO, government employees, their spouses and dependents residing with them;
Overseas citizens;
For reasons of employment will not be able to vote on election day;
Physically disabled persons;
Persons on vacation;

LMA student surprised by military brother before Homecoming game

Laurence Manning Academy senior Colton Ardis got the surprise of a lifetime on Friday night.
Long before his team destroyed longtime rival Wilson Hall by 35-0, Ardis was greeted by his brother, U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Jonathan Ardis, who came on the field for the coin toss before the game.
“I’ve never had the chance to see my younger brother play football in high school, and he’s always asked ‘When are you going to see me play?” Ardis wrote on social media.

The Clarendon County Democratic Party meeting will be held 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Sen. Johnson and Democratic Party Headquarters, located in the RadioShack shopping complex at 100 Capital Way in Manning. The group will resume meeting at Bassard Pond House in December after the Nov. 8 election.
Author, former House of Representatives member and civil rights leader Jim Felder will be the guest speaker, and will talk on the importance of voting. Felder been involved in voter registration and education since 1967. He also played a role in the burial of President John F. Kennedy.

Manning receives $25K grant from Municipal Association

The city of Manning got some great news Friday.
Clarendon’s county seat is one of eight cities and towns in South Carolina to be awarded a $25,000 Hometown Economic Development Grant by the Municipal Association of South Carolina.
The city will use the funds to pay for its Retail Development Initiative, begun earlier this year with the hiring of Retail Strategies out of Birmingham, Alabama.
“Most of it we will apply to our fees for this partnership, and travel to conferences and recruiting shows for our Retail Development Initiative,” said Manning City Administrator Scott Tanner.
